View Full Version : Adobe Premiere awkward transition behavior

I've been using Adobe Premiere 6.5 for a while now and I really like it except for one thing:

I have two clips, both are 150 frames long (for example). I want to trim both clips to 100 frames length and have a transition of 15 frames length between them.
Now when I cut the first clip to 100 frames and the second to 100 frames as well, the whole thing is 200 frames long. But when I insert a transition of 15 frames length, Premiere doesn't move the clips together so the resulting clip is 185 frames long, but it inserts 15 additional frames that have already been cut, so that the resulting clip is still 200 frames long.
However that's not what I want - I don't want the resulting clip to be exactly 200 frames, and I don't want frames to appear in a transition that I already deleted from a clip's end

--> That means I always have to cut more frames from a clip so that no unwanted frames appear in the transition. That means go to the place you want to cut, then count backwards a few frames and razor, then go back again, count forwards a few frames and razor... (very time consuming!)
I guess you should be able to change this behavior somewhere, but I just can't find where...

Try using A/B editing so you easily see the overlap of clips. If you are already using A/B, I'm not sure what to say. I've never experienced this. Are you setting the in/out points before putting the clips on the timeline, or are you cutting the clips on the timeline (razor)? I've always put the entire clip on the timeline and used the 'razor' with no problems.

I'm a bit confused with what your saying, but yes, try A/B editing and when you cut stuff, use ripple delete which automatically joins clips after
a cut

I found what the problem was: I had selected single track editing, not A/B editing. I thought it wouldn't differ much from A/B editing except that I was using only one track in the timeline. Now I found that using the A/B editing workspace really solves the problem.
Thanks!
