View Full Version : Video faster than audio (not framerate issue)

Okay. I have been trying to rip Minority Report, but I have not been able to get the video insync with the audio. I extracted the main movie's VOB files using DVD decrypter. Then I used DVD2AVI 1.76+ (check marked "Force Film") to make a D2V file and AC3 files. Then I made an AVS file to be used with AVIsynth 2.05 and the mpegdecoder.dll plugin (have also tried mpeg2dec.dll). To get the encoding settings for CCE I used Bitrate Viewer to view VTS_01_2.VOB. When I viewed VTS_01_1.VOB it read it as interlace, but the rest of the VOBs were progressive. Anyone know why that is? Bitrate Viewer read the following parameters:

Num. of picture read: 2191
Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR
Resolution: 720*480
Aspect ratio: 16:9 Generic
Framerate: 29.97
Nom. bitrate: 9801600 Bit/Sec
VBV buffer size: 112
Constrained param. flag: No
Chroma format: 4:2:0
DCT precision: 10
Pic. structure: Frame
Field topfirst: No
DCT type: Frame
Quantscale: Nonlinear
Scan type: ZigZag
Frame type: Progressive

I then set CCE's video settings as followed:

Add sequence end code = yes
Progressive frames = yes
Linear quantizer scale = yes
Zigzag scanning order = yes
DVD compliant = yes
Luminance level = 16 to 235
Intra DC Precision = 10
Aspect ratio = 16:9
Timecode = 00: 00: 00: 00
GOP sequence: M = 3, N/M = 4
Image Quality Priority = 5

I then set the average bitrate to 3,775, minimum to 2,000, and maximum to 9,800. I am using 6 passes. I encoded the video successfully. I then used pulldown.exe to do a 2:3 pulldown. However, I have yet to find the video insync with the audio. I have tried authoring with IFOedit and DVD Maestro, but they both achieve the same result; the audio gradually goes out of sync. At the beginning it's insync, but by the end of the movie it is at most 3 seconds out of sync. I am only trying one audio track, the Dolby Digital track, which has a 0ms delay.

Something strange I noticed is that the file CCE created was field top first, but I did not check upper field first in CCE. Then when I changed the framerate, the new video file was interlaced (and still field top first). So I did the pulldown again and used the the parameters "-framerate 29.97 -prog_frames p". But this did not solve anything, the audio was still out of sync when I authored. I think I also tried the "-drop_frame true" option. I also tried restream to make the video not top field first, but no luck.

It seems like the only problems I get with computers are the unsolved ones. Please help.

I had a similar problem with my encoding project so I'll tell you how I resolved mine. This doesnt apply directly to you but it may help.

First off, I started with an AVI so I had to extract the sound to a WAV file using VirtualDub.

After that was done I ran the AVI through VirtualDUb again and insted of using "source audio" I used "wav audio" to see if they were in synch the entire movie. As suspected they were out of synch about 2 seconds at the end of the project. So what I did at this point was increase the framerate of the movie from 23.976 to 23.978 manually under the Video > Framerate menu. After that I again attached the ORIGINAL WAV file to the video(the preattached audio had also increased speed with the framerate change). After this was done, then movie and sound were perfectly in synch so I saved the faster AVI with the original WAV. Afterward I did my encoding as normal and ultimately solved my synch problems.

Now like I said before, this probably doesnt(in fact I'm sure it doesnt) apply to you, but what I think needs to be done is your video file needs a slight increase in framerate, but not the audio file. Fortunately for me, it was possible in my process, but might not be in yours.

I hope this possibly helps you someway.

PS. I posted this response because I know how annoying it is not to get a response at all.

Thanks for the response. I wish I could just increase the framerate, but I need to make it the same as the source's framerate, 29.97. And I've done that, I just have no idea why it's still out of sync. Again, thanks for trying.

Make sure that CCE is not re-encoding the frame rate to PAL 25 frames. If this is happening you will end up with sync problems as your audio will still be 29.

NOTE: Dont try to change audio 29 frames to pal 25, just re-encoded your video to 29.
