I have a Hitatchi 16x DVD drive that I like but it is very slow at reading. I know it says 16x, but when I rip dvd's or CD's it only achieves like 1-2x. I know there is processing happening. But if I rip a CD in another drive it rips at 10x the speed. So I think the drive is just crappy. Also I ripped a DVD with my laptop (8x DVD) and it still rips faster than the hitatchi.
So the question is... what DVD Drive rips fast and is compatable with DVD-R and DVD+RW
THanks

I've had good drives from both Pioneer and Toshiba. I prefer the Pioneers since they have a slot loading model, but the two are pretty equal. Pioneer is a smidge faster, but the Toshiba drives are quieter /shrug.

The last pioneer I had wasn't DVD+RW compatable. What kind of speeds are you all getting with smart ripper?

I have both an IDE and a SCSI drive, the IDE is in a KT133A/Duron machine, get around 9x to 10x rips, but considering the inherent issues with IDE and that VIA chipset, that might slow it down a bit. I get a consistent 9x with the SCSI (which is only a 10x drive).
The Toshiba that was replaced by the IDE Pioneer I had was a 12x drive, not a problem with it in about 2 years, I'd get 7x to 8x with it consistently.
I couldn't really say on + compatibility, since I'm using - disks.
