Not that I'm complaining mind you, but after spending thousands hours on converting DVDs into VCDs, SVCDs and DVDr's since late 1999, I'm speechless at this first user-friendly true DVD back-up solution.
The thing is, how is Pinnacle getting away with this? You'd think that the movie industry (?) would be all over them. I know it doesn't work on encrypted movies, but...that's been the easiest part for copyinbg DVDs since day1!

basically because it refuses to backup copyrighted material so therefore in theory can only be used on non-copyrighted material (home movies ;) etc) and states it on the site
Share : Make a true 1:1 copy of any non-copy protected DVD on a recordable DVD
one day someone may hack it so it overlooks this check but again Pinnacle would not be responsible if they did but I don't know if this would work anyway due to encryption

I know, but I think everyone here will agree that it's er...turning your head not to see an obvious problem.
Anyway, I'm glad they came up with this solution!

to combat illegal piracy the movie industry should firstly drop the price of the originals to an acceptable amount so that more people would rather buy originals than naffy copies and also offer the option of replacing a damaged disc with proof of purchase tab from cover (like some have) along with defunct DVD for people who do buy originals and unfortunately damage them (or do they do that last bit already?)
the lost revenue from reduction in price will probably be made up by the increase in sales but decrease piracy. More production in the increase in sales means more jobs for people also
same applies to CD's, it's ridiculous what they charge for a CD, especially a CD single when a blank can be had for less than 20p
does anyone know roughly what it costs to manufacture a DVD and CD and what %age is actual profit?

well it's a difficult question...
Manufacturing probably costs around $1.5/$2.0 if you add infrastructure costs.
The big debate is indirect cost like scouting for talents, promotion, overhead, ditribution, etc...Don't get me wrong, it's a juicy biusiness overall, but you can't just compare the price of a blank with the price of CD/DVD on a shelf and shout in anger!

I knew a CD used by the industry costs more than 20p, I shudda really stated that people can make an illegal copy for as little as 20p
I guess I should really say that what puzzles me is that how they can sell a DVD for say £14 and then others sell for £20
and also look at the price differences offered on the same products
some places now charge £24 for a new DVD whereas other stores offer them at £20 and obviously online even cheaper. I think it the additions the resellers add on that get to me as I'm amazed people actually buy them for £24
I've lost count of the amount of times I've been in a store and seen someone buying something (not just CD/DVD's) and thought you can get that cheaper just down the road and even cheaper again on the net (not all people have access to net tho or don't like buying online)
a TV I've just looked at buying, Comet/Currys/Dixons all asking stupid prices, yet I could have got it 25% cheaper elsewhere yet people still buy them
I'm gonna stop now as this has nowt to do with the original question :D and I'm just whinging again like a scrooge
