View Full Version : Editing Captured Video...

I use USB Instant DVD to capture TV shows that I want to record to DVD. I can capture at 5MB/sec CBR and get DVD quality results. My question is, what can I use to edit this video? Specifically editing the commercials and stuff out of it? I've been using TMPGEnc but I'm not if it can handle DVD compliant streams, it seems to but after editing and mutliplexing they're sometimes out of sync.

I'm gonna mess with V-Dub but wanted to get everyones opinions on the subject.

Thanks,

Although through modifications VirtualDub *can* open MPEG-2 files, I don't know if you'll have any luck cutting commercials from them. Unless I am mistaken, you can only cut at I-frames, so your cuts will always be a little off.

Solution? Cap all I-frames, or cap AVI and encode to MPEG-2. The former is kind of a half-assed solution, the latter is more efficient/higher quality.

I'd love to cap as AVI but my cap device will only cap to VCD, SVCD, or broadcast quality MPEG-2....

Unless someone has written an app that works with USB Instant DVD. I contact the manufacturer - they said that the only app that would work would be their capturing software....hey wait....does Ulead Video Studio cap to AVI? I'll check that out...

Thanks for your opinions...

If you want to keep capturing with mpeg2 i suggest you to try mpeg2dec+avisynth=>tmpeg the best solution for editing and for quality. Check out doom9's guides for futher details.

It makes sense to use VirtualDub in conjunction with Avisynth or the VirtualDub-MPEG2-AC3 modification if you are going to encode e.g. to DivX or some some other AVI format using VfW codecs. If your target is MPEG-2, then the VirtualDub way will introduce a reencoding step, which should be avoided for quality reasons, unless you need to filter, resize, etc.

Search the forums for "PVACut" and "PVAstrumento", and you'll find all you need on how to cut without reencoding.

It costs money, but it's very good.... and very fast.

MPEG2VCR

Well worth the money if you ask me. Although I'd like it to be cheaper...

Yep - Virtually everybody that has the most success writing their ReplayTV files to DVD are using Womble's editor for GOP fixing and editing out commercials.

Now if only my wife would buy into the $250 price tag... :)
