KiSS Technology Launches First DivX Certified DVD Players at CeBIT Trade Show
KiSS DP-450 and DP-500 Are First CE Devices to Play Back all Versions of DivX Video - including 3.11. DP-500 equipped with Ethernet connection and KiSS PC-link software lets anyone easily download a protected movie and watch it on their TV, not just the computer.

Hannover, Germany--March 12, 2003-- KiSS Technology, a leading manufacturer of DVD products throughout the world, and DivXNetworks, Inc, the company that created the revolutionary patent-pending DivX ® video compression technology, today announced the release of the first fully DivX Certified DVD players at the CeBit computer show in Hannover, Germany. The DP-450 and DP-500 from KiSS Technology are the first DVD players to support high-quality playback of all versions of DivX video content. The devices are on display at the KiSS Technology booth at CeBit in Hall 20, Stand E33.

The KiSS DP-500 and DP-450, powered by the EM 8500 DVD decoder chip from Sigma Designs, are the first publicly released consumer electronics products to pass the rigorous certification process developed by the DivXNetworks team of video engineers. The certification process ensures that the devices offer playback of all versions of DivX technology (5.xx, 4.xx and 3.xx) at the highest possible quality levels and fully support digital rights management technology developed by DivXNetworks.

The revolutionary KiSS DP-500 is the first network-capable DVD player to offer DivX playback, enabling users to download DivX content from the Internet and then play it directly on a television. DivX video, which offers DVD-quality video at 7-10 times greater compression than MPEG-2, is the world's most popular MPEG-4 compatible video compression technology with over 75 million worldwide users. A wide range of DivX-certified consumer electronics devices, from portable video players to DVD players and set-top boxes, are scheduled to hit the market in 2003.

"The release of the KiSS DP-500 represents a real milestone for millions of DivX users all over the world. Now anyone can easily download a protected movie and watch it on their TV, not just the computer," said Kevin Hell, Managing Director and Chief Marketing Officer at DivXNetworks, Inc. (www.divxnetworks.com) "As the first device to enable high-quality playback of all versions of DivX video with full support for DivX digital rights management technology, the DP-500 is the model for a true `convergence' device that represents the future of consumer electronics. And because it is a connected device, the DP-500 will allow the consumer to easily move secure content through the connected home. "

At the first glance it sounds like you could easily play any DivX file you've got on this standalone.

But what about file formats? Does it support AVI only or OGM as well (probably not)?

What about audio formats? AC3 support? Ogg Vorbis support? Multichannel support?

I wonder if I will ever see a standalone which could replace my super-flexible, extensible, any-format player called PC...

@waldok:
I know the feeling, but let me tell you have bigger odds to stay alive if it is something like this (http://www.chyangfun.com/Product/CF-S668.htm) or this (http://www.chyangfun.com/Product/CF-S968.htm).

My highest respect for the KiSS people if they got DivX 3.11 playback on the EM 8500 ...

This will put the other companies, like Neuston, under a lot of pressure. I am convinced we could make them a nice package once -h has got his MPEG4ISO converter up and running, but it seems he is lost in action, somewhere in the outskirts of down under, trying to chase kangaroos, or being chased by them ... LOL ...

don't have a kiss player but as far as i know it can play ogg and ac3 but not ogm files. vbr mp3 is supported but a bit buggy. Still if it resolves those issues it will be able to play the vast amount of movies encoded.

Any words on Resolution/Aspect ratio restrictions on these players?

For example:

Do movies have to have a specific resolution or is there an upper/lower limit or a limit to certain aspect ratios? (such as only 4:3 -> 640x480/512x384)?

Does it assume pixels to be always square or is there support for embedded aspect ratio (in mp4 streams for example, if it supports mp4 at all..)

??

Just hide it in a cupboard. At least that's what I did, and since then my wife didn't bother me any longer ;)

may res is 720 * 576 for the PAL version

Nope, interesting enough it doesnt, or at least all the MP4 files created by the DivX5 muxer tools or MPEG4IP didnt work in them, as reported by several users who bought such a unit. Same goes for AAC audio : not supported yet ...

Thanx for the infos...at least they're catching up with DivX3.11...let's hope we'll have a full-featured player someday incl. mp4, aac, embedded aspect ratio etc... :)

This is pretty cool news considering, what did they do add a hard drive or a buffering device for the ethernet? Sure would have been nice to have seen a spec sheet on these newer revisions from CEBIT have any links?

...the DP-500 will allow the consumer to easily move secure content through the connected home.I hate split infinitives from people who should know better :angry:

@temporance:
Should it be: "(...) to move easily secure content (...)"?
That would be the kind of mistake I could easily do...:confused:
Is this last one OK, not being an infinitive, or does the same rule apply?

anyone has any data on will these players
support non-standard 311 (or other divx forms)
resolutions?

if not, what resolutions it DOES support?

for example will it swallow 352x576 or
480x576 divx?
or something more extravagant;352x280?
or (god-forbid...hehe) "non-16" resolutions...
PC's play anything (at least with ffdshow..hehe)
will this?
