based on what i've seen of the crappy DBS services like directv and dishnetwork, i'd have to say about 3mbps-4mbps... (this is not counting their HDTV services, which i have not seen)

A lot of people seem to think they average around 14 mbps.

i did some digging around. directv uses 3mbps and 7.5mbps depending on the channel content (eg talk shows or sports). this is of course not counting the HDTV channels.
this does go a long way to explaining why directv looks so crappy.

Your average DVD uses around 3.5mbps for video, and maybe 7mbps for video on a superbit DVD. I don't believe the audio would add that much on.

thats 3mbps max for the channel, not average...
and boy does it look crappy. but i guess joe public doesnt really care about quality, he just wants more channels.

And what would you be comparing that to??? Cable???? DTV is far far superior to any broadcast or cable delivery infrastructure in place at the moment.

It's not "far" superior, there are some digital cable providers with similar quality. But I guess the fair standard for comparison is over-the-air DTV. An SD mpeg-2 stream, with a good bandwidth, can match and sometimes even outshine DVD.

You are obviously not a ATT/Comcast cable customer ;) Horrid picture, some channels were OK, most were unwatchable.... Dropped them like a bad habit...
As to broadcast TV, would not know... I'm in a RF shadow - can't get here from there... it is either cable or sat...
