i have an ati all-in-wonder pro in my htpc and use it connected to my tv as primary display (no monitor) to play divx, dvds, and the like. i use win98 running at 640x480 60hz (overscan enabled) with 32 bit color depth. i have directx 9 and use windows media player 9 and powerdvd xp to play movies, but unfortunately the quality of the tv output is far less than i was hoping for.
no matter if im playing a dvd or divx, there is very noticable color blotching and patchy areas / blockiness in the darker areas of the picture. it is more noticable in divx because of the high compression, but when i view the video thru a monitor instead of a tv with the exact same resolution/refresh, the problem is not visible.
i have tried other tvs, and i even tried a buddies laptop and the same problem is there with his tv-out, again noticable on the tv but not on the laptop screen. intrestingly, i also tried putting my friends nvidia tnt2 card in my pc instead of the all-in-wonder card, and the quality on the tv was perfect.
so i dont know if there is some setting i can change, or what, but ive heard people say great things about these ati cards, so im hoping i wont have to scrap it. i wish i could attach a screen shot, but i dont know a way how, since the prob is only on the tv display.
thanks for any help you can offer.
