Hi folks,
apologies if this is in the wrong forum, and forgive my ignorance but I've tried searching and haven't really found something quick that will do this. Anyhow, my problem is this: I need to take say 1 hour of VHS at a time, capture it as an MJPEG in Win ME/98 with my Matrox Rainbow Runner (old card, and only has drivers for 95/98/ME but it does it's job well...) and then I need to encode this as a VCD\SVCD quality MPEG as quickly as is possible! Can someone tell me how, or send me to a guide? Please! It's really important, and as I said, it needs to be quick.
Thanks,
Your crazy Irish friend,
PnaG.

I would use DVD2SVCD since it appears you have limited knowledge on the subject and IMO it kicks ass anyway.
There is a guide on Doom9 and we have the forums here too.
Just read up a little, especially all the stickies and I think you will be off and running.
Also don't forget the search button it can save you a good deal of time if you run into a problem encoding.
As for time, well that is up to you. In short the more time you take the better the quality up to a point.
Also the faster the computer the shorter the time.
Good Luck,
Mark

These kinds of posts really pisses me off. You have formulated, and not by accident, your topic so that somebody would actually believe that you are offering guide or some good softwares for this, but instead of that you were just lazy and wanted to get as easy as possible yourself without doing any kind of searching in these forums or even guides.
Naturally these kind of conversions could have been found dozens around the net and even in dooom9's pages. You could have post it at least to newbies-section, but of course you know that already and just wanted t get as much answers and attention as possible.
So here was my answers to you, boy.

This may be 3 month late but....
Matrox in their infinite wisdom decided to hide YUY2 capture mode in the Rainbow runner capture drivers. If you troll around in the Matrox Users Forum (http://forums.matroxusers.com/) you should find the patched drivers that allow excelent YUY2 captures from this card.
Using Matrox MJPEG compression even at maximum quality I have always found gave very poor results compressing to MPEG compared to the same capture done in YUY2 mode. Using Huffyuv compression on a 480x576 YUY2 capture is only about 30% bigger than a max quality 704x576 MJPEG capture and the resultant SVCD MPEG is over 100% better looking.
Also the capture drivers suffer from the 2^31 microsecond (35m 47.48s) rollover bug so make sure your capture program can compensate for this (VirtualDub does nicely).
