I bought a trial pack of generic DVD-R. White on one side, light purple on the other. The first pack had no serial number in the ring. They all burned fine and played back fine in a couple STB and couple PC-DVD players.

Went back for more and thought I got same ones. These looked the same except for the serial number in the ring.

ADVDRINFO shows these to be the same but the second batch work like crap and ALL screw up about 70% into the disc. I use Nero and it burns fine but they do start stuttering and locking up about 2/3 - 3/4 into the movies.

Any ideas about this? I thought they are the same but I must be missing something.

Thanks

If they have a glossy white top it sounds like you got princo 2 discs with the tdk code on them to allow 2x write speed.

Yep I have the same Princo crap that fakes TDK leadin info... 100% failure :( It only works if my DVD is less than 3GB :(

What's the serial you have on the DVD-R ? Does it start with something like P-2X.......... ?

The TRUE TDKs have all a small TDK logo on them, FYI. The quality is soooooo different, so far the best DVD-R I have been using !

The Princo fakes I got have serial number starting with 2T...

I don't think it matters: if they fake the lead in, they can put any kind of fake serial number on.

They do not have the TDK logo. To be fair, I read the receipt later and they did say Princo discs. I did not bother reading receipt and relied on what ADVDInfo told me.

I did not realize there were fakes out there.

So far, princo is the only one I've heard of that has faked their disk lead-ins like that. TDK put up a web page that talked about it and they distanced themselves from those fake TDK disks princo was putting out. I guess a lot of people were complaining to TDK about these disks that weren't even TDK's :)

In Germany, there are some discs sold called "Penmax". They have a TDK G01 - ID, and are so crappy, it must be fake as well.
