Hi, im new to the forum (read the faq etc) but i cant get going when it comes to capturing.

System

Athlon TB 1.4 ghz, 512 2100 ddr, 40 gig 7200 rpm hd, capture device is vivo on my Gainward GF4 Ti4200, OS = Windows 98 SE

I only decided to try capturing tonight after having the card for a long time. I installed the software which came with the card (Wincoder & Winproducer). Also ive installed the drivers for video capturing (which were on the gfx card cd) and now my problem starts.

When i attempt to run Wincoder i get this error

WINCODER caused an invalid page fault in
module MFC42.DLL at 0167:5f420b2a.

When i run the diagnostics tool the program knows the capture device is there as it gives me its name and supported resolutions etc.

Can anyone help me here? i have no idea what is causing this fault and as you might be able to see its a bit hard to progress and actually attempt to capture something :(

Thanks for any help coming.

Welcome,

can you open your device with you TV program ? Can you watch TV on the computer. If yes then try VDub Sync (-> FAQ). IMO it is the best for capturing video the hard (analogue) way

This is either a buggy app (wincoder) or more likely dll hell. :)

Some program has (probably) replaced mfc42.dll with its own updated/modified/incompatible version in your system/system32 dir. Wincoder apparently doesn't like this version, and doesn't handle it very nicely.

IMO you can't really easily do that much about it. First, try another more popular capture app. VirtualVCR (free), Virtualdub (free), iuVCR, are all great.

If you really wanted to use wincoder, then you could always do a backup, reformat, and reinstall of you OS. After installing all the windows updates, but before installing any of you apps...install wincoder. If it works, grab the mfc42.dll file and copy it somewhere. Keep installing your necesary apps one by one, and test wincoder after each. Once/if you run into the page fault, you know the problematic app. Then you can decide what app is more important. Most professional software (Adobe, Macromedia, Microsoft :)) shouldn't cause problems, but watch out for those shareware utilities.

if u want mpeg2 or mpeg1 simple captures,
try the windvr, it works very better for me (in a gf4 mx460 vivo)

in the intervideo site has a trial... test it..

Thanks for the suggestions, since ive never used any apps before i have no preference of what im going to use yet. I got that with the card so thought that would be a good place to start.

I'll try some of the other suggested here and let you know how i get on soon :D
