I found much the same. I used both to encode The Shawshank Redemption as it was the largest (file size wise) DVD I have at about 7,700MB.
On my 68cm TV both were quite watchable, and for the most part I though the quality was great for such a quick encode. However, using the zoom funtion on my set top DVD (Pioneer 355) or playbeck through my projector on a 120" screen, and the image artifacts can easily be seen.
I also agree and think that using this one comparision as a basis (so it may not be anything to set rules by) that the image quality in IC was slightly better than DVD2ONE. For those who are just after a quick and simple way to backup your DVDs and aren't overly fused about quality, then I think both of these programs are great.
For myself, if I'm going to backup a DVD and have that as the play disk, it must be so close to the original in quality that it's not noticable to the human eye, so it's back to the CCE guides for me, otherwise I may as well just watch the original. This is also due to the fact I watch everything on a big screen which really highlights any image artifacts.
It would be great if one of these programs either had tweakable encoding options for those you wanted a quick backup against, as well as settings for a much higher quality setting for those a bit more particular, or was able to use some kind of encoder plug-in so you could use your favourite encoder to do what it does best to get the best results. I spose this type of all-in-one software is still pretty young, it may be in a future release, who knows?
