Simple editing of mpeg 1 or mpeg 2

I have been recording TV shows and converting to Divx for quite a while now. Just got a DVD burner and I want to start doing better quality files, but I can't figure out what editing software to use. All I want is to do simple cutouts of the commercials, but I have found no program that I like as much as virtualdub for this. Is there either a mod for virtual dub or a program similar to it that I can use that can save back into Mpeg 1 or 2 format. I found the virtualdub mpeg 2 mod, but I am not sure if I want to keep using divx/xvid.

well, you're in the wrong forum. ;p No big deal though. There are some guides I *think* on www.doom9.com 's homepage that explain this. Best bet, or roadmap is this for Divx -> DVD conversion:

1. Learn VirtualDub
2. Learn AVISYNTH
3. Learn CCE

Those are your three MAIN steps. Everything else is just the fat. ;)
