Who can purchases Scenarist?

I’ve seen many posts on this software and how good it is. I know other programs such as ReAuthorist use it to author, but the price is out of bounds. I called a retailer and was told the cheapest version is $8,000. and it goes as high as $22,000.

This is a back-up web site/forum, where most people are just doing this as a hobby. I’m not going to be able to convince my wife that I should spend $8,000. on software. How do you all convince yourself to purchase it?

:confused: I agree, who can afford to buy scenarist just for backing up DVD's. :confused:
Maybe there is something I've missed, but if we know how all the original ifo's points to each vobID/cellID, how come we can't put everything back in order without the use of an authoring tool like Scenarist or Maestro? I thought that ifoUpdate and/or ReAuthorist was supposed to do that, but this obviously isn't the case...

well... the problem is that you need a full blown authoring tool. If you start changing the structure of a video file (GOPs and such) there's no way to put everything back together than to use an authoring program. IfoEdit was going into that direction but there has been no ongoing development for quite some time now.
So all we have is Scenarist I'm afraid.

Yup... what he said.

If I were rich enough to not need to work, of course I would be researching how to encode subpicture streams and mux different streams together into a VOB. I would then lovingly code this into ReAuthorist. As it is however, I work 28.73 hours a day to keep myself in the lap of luxury and trying not to be made redundant. So it's not gonna happen for some time yet I'm afraid.

Derrow was our best hope, but sadly he was poached. And we're never going to get the source either so we'd be starting from scratch.

...the possiblilty of ASCI-Input files, which can be prepared by any software if you know the format. That is what Aquabubble is doing at the moment with great success in his new project.

So in the final stage of such a tool preparing input code for Scenarist, Scenarist will only act as a muxing tool for all different streams.

Buying Scenarist for that reason is another question.

Cheers

Guys you are htting a very interesting point. I guess that people who can afford 8000+ bucks in scenarist won't backup dvd's but rather buy 2 or 3 copies of the same movie, which is easiest and has more quality since they come in DVD9 instead of DVD5.
It would be a very nice thing if any mod around starts an anonymous poll asking how many people has actually paid for the software they are using...

@Fmazzanti

Yes i agree with the point of view that whoever buys scenarist should be able to affor to get 2-3 copies of the same movie. But then u forget about the challenge or the hobby that so many people have ith this forum backing up or creating new things. Lets not forget that u may start with simple backups go to something more difficult like multi-pgcs and finally author a new dvd from scratch on your own. In this case hell yes u need maestro or scenarist. Now as for the "how many ppl can afford to buy it" well this is a question that will never be answered i guess. But I believe that some ppl really own these proggies. I dont but I have it in my work so I can play with it during the lunch time or after I finish my shift. I guess I am from the lucky ones but as I said for me is more a hobby and a challenge.

@YODAS,
I agree about the challenge and the hobby, but I bet my pants this is less than 25% of the people here. Hey, just look at the majority of the posts! Many people complain that this thing or this other thing didn't work in their project, and few people asks about the theoretical background and heneral aspects of authoring/encoding...
No one even ask where people get the DVD's they're backing up from, and I seem to remember there was a poll somewhere were you could see that 80% of ppl was backing up DVD's they don't own. Me, I'm currently copying movies my brother has, and don't know where will I get the movies to copy in the future... Let's face it: everybody KNOWS most of the info in this site is used to do things that are partially or totally ilegal, but nobody wants to talk about it... Mods or other people around may not like it, but that won't change the actual real facts.

This is a silly go-nowhere thread, so consider it closed.
