Windows 2000 or XP which is better for back-ups?

Currently I am running Win 98, but I am upgrading my system and want to know which operating system is the best for back-ups (encoding and authoring) and why?

I've always used Win2K. I have it on all 3 of my machines and I never have any problems. Someday I may switch to XP but I'm holding out as long as I can.

Windows 2000 is great the only two small problem's you will run in to is that DVD2DVD-R runnging windows 2000 you need to install service pack 3 the only other thing is that DVDXCOPY can only back up the MATRIX other then that there both very good to use. If you want software to work more like PC game's you'll have a better chance running them in XP

If you are using Win98 they you have an older computer right? Condsider that XP takes a lot of space to install compared to W2K, and it has a lot of extras that can bog down your system.

However if you have the disk space, CPU power and you know how to configure your OS to get rid of all the usless features then XP is as good as or better than W2K for resource management and efficiency.

I have a PIII 700 1 gb ram and I'm using Win XP pro (base install, service pack 0). No problems with stability or runing any of the DVD programs + games I use.

Either way, you will find that NT operating systems (XP and W2K) are much much better than 9x operating systems.

The core of both os is basically the same, they won't make a difference for back-ups. I switch to XP becaue it has better hardware compatibilty and more user friendly.

Also, change the file system to NTFS is a good idea. NTFS is more robust and supports both bigger file size and hard drive.

for encoding, 2k or XP is fine, as long as you use NTFS

for authoring, the high end programs (especiall Maestro and derivitaves) prefer to run on NT4 or 2k, but you should look at the OFFICIAL specs for the authoring program(s) you intend to use before upgrading.
