VisibleLight already sells it for $58. I think this is great and beats TMPGEnc out of the water.

This is great for dvd authoring most definitely. For SVCDs though a 3 or 4 pass VBR is needed for low bitrate around 1600 to achieve great video quality. CCE Basic only has CBR and 2 pass VBR which at bitrates above 2500Kbps will look amazing.

Has anyone done an encode with this yet to compare to CCE SP 2.64? Is it as fast? Does the quality compare? Does it deal with AVISynth input? Do we have a $58 encoder on the market with comparable quality to the $1950 version? I'll run my own tests over the weekend, but I'm curious what others think.

it looks like it's a spinoff of cce sp with some features removed.
Using the same settings 2 pass VBR should look the same on both encoders, unless you use the advanced filtering CCE SP has.
It can handle AVS, that's for sure but I haven't encoded anything yet myself.
Did a quick test with the Basic and SP trial with identical settings (all filters off in CCE SP 2.66 and 2.67 Basic, 2 pass VBR) and can't see any difference, speed is the same. The basic CCE won't let you set image quality preference and VBR Bias though, keep this in mind. So I think it's OK if target is DVD, but SVCD needs more than 2 passes IMHO.
