When I capture video from my TV card, the top portion of the video has these flickering dashes. It only happens for certain channels. is there a way I can remove it or prevent it from happening again? Its the top maybe couple of milimeters of the video...thanks for your replies.

I believe this is Wide Screen Signalling (WSS) information. It occurs on line 23 of the video (of which, the first half of that line is WSS info, the other half is active picture, thats why your seeing it) It signals how the TV station displays the given video clip (either 4:3 or 16:9). Usually that 1/2 line is blocked but some stations do not remove it. Alternatively it could be Teletext/Captioning information residing on Line 21 (I'm assuming you're talking abot an analogue broadcast). If you were viewing this with an overscan TV you wouldn't see it. As for cropping prior to capture, I think vdub can do this, but, be sure to crop a total of 16 pixels top and bottom to avoid encoding errors.

Thank you for that clarification. You are right, I only notice it happen on certain channels, but most of them are fine. Ill try using Vdub to capture, but last time I tried it it didn't seem to work with my TV card.
