View Full Version : macro blocks using DVD2ONE ?

Hi all,
{Sorry if that thread has already been discussed, but I didn't find any clear answer to it in the other posts.}

I burned several DVD-R using DVD2ONE and NERO 5.5.10.7, and the result was always perfect, even with low-price media.
The problem is that the ones I burn since a few days present macro-blocks on some scenes, to the point I finally watch a "re-encrypted" movie, til I stop and replay the chapter !

I thought macro-blocks were due to a lower bitrate, but I burned again a movie that was previously perfectly burned, using the same process and media , and I got again these blocks ! Retried on another media, and it worked well (no blocks).

So, that's my question: are macro-blocks due only to compression, or can media or something else responsible, too ?
e.g a better media can avoid that with the same process, ...

Is there a way to prevent them (max size -> 4.37 Gb, ...) ?

Thanx to anyone who can help
Fuerte

I think your answer lies in your question. If the same data plays differently on different media, then it is a media problem. It may only be that your player has difficulty with a particular brand, though, and not truly defective media.

btw - macroblocks are a coding unit, not a visual artifact or defect. I understood your question, but I'm one of those people who gets hung up on details.

Thanks mpucoder,
you're right, I'm speaking of the square blocks, that appears when the DVD player can't read it properly (sorry for the confusing ...)

The strange thing is that 1 DVD_R (Princo) plays perfectly, and another (same brand, same pack) doesn't play fine. I didn't mention that the squares don't appear in the same scenes each time (if I replay the chapter, it works fine, and the problem overcomes further).

I think that my standalone player supports Princo media, but that this brand may be inconsistent in quality (I noticed some dust inside my second pack - I cleaned the DVDs but that might signify that manufacturing is not so reliable) . Do you think that's the point ?

I'm gonna try the same process with higher quality media ...
Too bad if that's it, blank DVDs are still expensive in France (~5$ each, vs ~1.80$ for the Princo ones ):mad:

FUerte,

If you need DVD-R a bit cheaper, find yourself a "Cora", they sell Verbatim 25 pieces spindles for 75 euros.

I think this is a media problem, and so I'm moving the thread to the forum dedicated to these problems.

Yes sounds like a media problem to me as well.
Can you get Ritek over there? They're cheaper than verbatim, costlier than princo, but better than princo!

princo=crap

not from experience but from what i've heard.

Thanks to everyone
I think now it's really a media problem (nothing to see with DVD2ONE !!!).
I had heard that Princo was crap, too, but I don't always trust what "one says ....", I wanted to try by myself, and the first pack was pretty good. I was less lucky with the second one, but the third that I'm burning seems good, too.

So Princo = crap -> I don't agree. Not absolutely reliable, OK. But twice cheaper than others in France, so it worths some cloasters ...

I bought some Memorex in Luxembourg (where I'm working ...) at 3.30 euros (prices are decreasing, now). Gonna try, and I'll let you know if Princo is the real guilty !!

Bye.
