Interesting for HP DVD300i and NEC ND-1100a(NEC 1300) owners............
Dre used our newssubmit to tell us intresting information regarding the latest NEC drives. Rumors are that NEC is currently selling a DVD+R drive that is also able to write DVD-R discs, but this has been disabled by the firmware. Today more evidence on this as Dre submitted some more information to us.
I just bought a HP DVD300i and I've found evidence that the drive is based on the NEC ND-1100a DVD-+R/RW drive (also called the NEC 1300). I scanned label on the bottom (http://home.mindspring.com/~andresc/DVD300i.jpg) and included a link to the picture. First, in the lower left hand corner is ND-1100a which is the model for NEC's Dual Format DVD+-R/RW drive.
Second, I looked up the FCC ID, which is in the upper right. The documents (https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/oet/forms/reports/Search_Form.hts?mode=Edit&form=Exhibits&application_id=549173&fcc_id=A3DLVLDB-0201) at the FCC indicate that this is a DVD writer made by NEC. If you look at the manual at the FCC website, you can see that this drive supports both -+ formats.
The rumors on this are getting more and more and this is again evidence that seems to support this, but why did NEC ship a dual format drive and enabled only one format? If you have a DVD writer please post the FCC ID (see the picture where it is located), maybe we'll find a matching DVD-R drive. And the big question is, will it be possible to flash this drive to dual format drive?

So the big question...is it possible to flash this drive to dual format drive?
AS you know, be carful when flashing drives, especially your brand new DVD writer.
