Hey... My DVD drive (2 years old), has started acting really strange.
It reads Audio CDs and DVDs just fine, but when I try to read a Data CD, it starts acting up.

At first, it will spin up, and the explorer auto run opens up, displaying the directory contents. But as I start browsing a CD, the drive spins down suddenly

It then starts doing a series of small seeks (like it does when you first put in the CD, before spin up).

Then, the LED on my other drive (SONY writer), lights up! As if that drive were seeking a CD!!!

(The SONY and the Pioneer are on Secondary IDE as Slave and Master respectively)

I have disconnected both drives, and tried to use them separately.
The SONY works just fine, but the Pioneer doesn't.
I have also changed my IDE cable.

What could be the problem?

Ok... So I went and bought a new writer - SONY 52/24/52
I replaced my older writer, and I also replaced the IDE cable I was using, with the one that came with the new writer.

Seems that my DVD drive did not like my old CD-Writer, because now, it is functioning just fine!

Very very odd...

My happiness was short lived.
The drive behaved itself for a few short hours, and then got back to it's mischief!

Here is my current h/w layout (according to BIOS):
Primary Master - Segate Barracuda - UDMA 4
Primary Slave - SONY writer - UDMA 2
Secondary Master - Pioneer DVD - UDMA 2

However, in XP's device manager, the Pioneer drive shows as PIO mode 4. It doesn't detect it as UDMA.

What do I do?
The Pioneer still reads Audio and DVD without any problems.
It has a problem only with data CDs.

Hey guys. I fixed my problem. I re-flashed my drive, and all is fine!

I had similar problems with my Pioneer 104S, also solved them with a firmware update.
These drives are weird! You never know what they're going to do next!

Recently mine wouldn't read CDs anymore, not even a brand new and perfect DVD. I decided to open the drive and see if maybe the laser lens was full of dust or something. I opened it, but the lens was perfectly clear - so I closed it without doing anything else. After that it has been working perfectly for weeks now. Just like new :D
