OK so I read a lot of people here have upgraded to 1.0g but humm one question. I've read if not done properly you could end up with a $350 CD burner. Sony recomends "Disable DMA" before installing. I assume in XP going to Device Manager and DRU500a properties is the way to go but I find no on/off switch for DMA. I also read be sure to uninstall any "packet writing software". Can anyone tell me the proper steps?

Oh to burn at 2x or more, I get chills thinking about it...

Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> Primary or secondary where ever you Sony is -> Advanced Settings -> Change DMA if Available to PIO only -> Reboot to be sure -> check to make sure the setting took -> run the Sony upgrade program it will most likely want to reboot before actually upgrading and then once more when it's done. After the reboot Sony does you have to start the program again.

Thanks Markrb,
That makes sense go to the Secondary IDE channel since thats where the DVD drive is located and DMA setting are there. Good Job. You da headbangin man!

Thanks again Markrb, between you, Microsoft, & Sony I gathered enough info to feel informed enough to try it. Uninstalled all packet writing software, Disabled DMA in secondary IDE channel, and ran the upgrade program. Computer rebooted before and after upgrade as you said and installation was sucessfull.

I then burned a split Star Trek TNG DVD image file of 4.2GB on to a Ritek G03 DVD-R blank in a record 28 minutes! 2x is a reality!
