Anybody watch the Grammy's in HDTV on CBS tonight?

Except for a minor and intermittent audio sync problem I thought it was maybe the best HDTV production I've ever seen.

It was enough to keep me off the Internet all evening just so I wouldn't do anything to maybe screw up my recording.

flipped to it now and again. picture looked outstanding.

just got my HD setup and although it is great, it has ruined the other 95% of the channels for me.;)

Was it supposed to be in 5.1? I thought I read that somewhere. In Seattle it was just stereo.

It was 5.1 here in Detroit, though with the occasional minor sync problems.

It was the first time I sat down to watch the Grammies. I liked it.

The word is that CBS was so pleased with the feedback that Friday's Springstein concert will also be in HDTV, though it's not certain yet if it will be in 5.1 sound.

Absolutely incredible. WOW.

This is from Dish, so no dropouts or sync problems. On a 50" plasma, it's the closest thing to reality I've ever seen. The sound was also fantastic. Possibly the best HD ever, yes. Definitely the best HD live broadcast and production ever.

Even the music was all right. Coldplay disappointed, but the Clash tribute was fantastic.

I'm not sure yet if my sync problems are regular enough to be correctable on the recording.

But I do know I was impressed enough by the sound that I let Eminem blow out the cones on my cheapo sub-woofer. ;) And it made me like HDTV 5.1 sound enough that I went out and got a big honking (equally cheap,$80 with rebate) replacement at CostCo and went shopping for 5.1 Concert DVD's.

I had never really explored the Music DVD section at Best Buy before but I think I'm going to start watching for both those and all future HDTV concerts to record, at least the 5.1 productions.

I am not an audiophile, or even really audio literate, so HDTV has really opened up a new area for me.

It's strange how unblanaced people can be in their audio/video equipment and experience. I'm guilty of the same thing - being much more of a videophile, I have decent video gear, but only a cheap Radioshack 5.1 system that doesn't even do DTS. Of course, there are also plenty of people with superb pre/pros, amps and speakers and a curved 27" tube TV...

Guys, is anyone willing to leak high quality rip of it into any p2p network? ;-)

I don't think we are supposed to make requests here like that, smiley or no.

This is a bit off-topic, but it seems a good time to ask.

Does anyone know if it is illegal to GIVE away a copy of publicly broadcasted material in the US? While I'm pretty sure you can't sell it, I would think that giving away material that is broadcasted publicly would be okay. Is this covered in that VHS fair rights case from back in the 80's?

This may turn my Grammy thread into one of those endless copyright debates that seem to pop up these days. But I hope not, so let's not debate it too much here.

But in the USA there is a "right of first sale" doctrine that says if you have recorded it legally you are allowed to give away your only copy to someone else, just like you can sell a book that you own.

But beware there is a difference between what the law says and what Doom9 policy may have to enforce for various reasons. So of course the rules would still not allow us to be posting or soliciting these recordings here on this board.

Not only was I shocked to see CBS carry the show HDTV, but 5.1. It was 5.1 in the bay area. This was one nice broadcasts. To add to that... my wife actually tuned in the digital channel instead of the directv local channel. This was more of a shock to me, although she did have the volume pretty low, this is full surround, crank it baby!

As a follow up, CBS did do the Springsteen concert in HD and it was pretty good. But not like the Grammy Awards, and no 5.1 sound.

(belated reply ;) )

I am one of those very unbalanced video people. I write filters and fuss over interlace artifacts or chroma delays. But I'm only starting to appreciate music and only use a CostCo Pioneer AV Receiver that I picked up on sale for <$200 about a year ago. And even that probably has better sound than I can hear.

Critical eye, tin ear, can't carry a tune in a bucket. ;)

But something about being able to record HDTV video with sound like the Grammy's delivered has gotten me interested.

@trbarry:

If you can't hear it well, make it louder :-)

Make your neighbourgs regret they ever chose that place to live in.
