Hi people!

I am considering to buy either a CD burner or a DVD burner. There are some considerations I'd like to comment with you all.

It is finally happening in my country: recording DVD-R media isn't anymore more expensive than recording CD-Rs (at least for a GB/$ point of view). Nonetheless, the DVD burner itself still costs a good fistful of bucks. It's far more expensive that the best CD burners.

I am willing to buy one of them nice DVD burners, but I'd like to do it right. The DVD recording speeds are not quite cool (you still have to spend a good deal of time or each single DVD you burn), but... what the heck! The thing actually is that I really want to get some real advantages by CD-recording in exchange for the higher price.

Unluckily, CD recording speeds of current DVD burners are not really impressive: CD-R are burnt at 16x in most of the cases, and CD-RWs are burnt at 8x. The cheapiest CD burners are fairly speedier than that!! Do you guys know of some DVD burner offering speedy CD recording?

The only remaining CD-recording related advantage I can think of is being able to record 90min and 100min CD-Rs, and there comes the most important question I wanted to ask you, boys: does any DVD burner allow to burn 90 and 100min media? At what speeds?

Thanks !!!

I'm curious, you say "recording DVD-R media isn't anymore more expensive than recording CD-Rs" then why do you want to burn on CD-Rs when you can burn on 4.7GB DVD-Rs?

I mean that DVD media prices are sinking and are low enough to be comparable, if not equal, to CD-R (at least where I live).

DVD burners are still expensive. That's the only problem. And I'd like to get as many features as possible from it.

Can you answer my questions?

Personally, I’d get a DVD burner and burn data to DVDR discs. If you’re concern about the speed at which the DVD burners burn CDs, then I’d suggest you get a separate CD burner.

If you can’t afford both or you can’t justify paying premium for a DVD burner with inferior CD burning speeds, then get yourself a top of the line CD burner while you wait for the DVD burners to come down in price.

Several times now here in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon) the "Cendyne" -05 burner has gone on sale for $150 net, after all rebates and discounts. The Cendyne is the same drive as the Pioneer -05, and in fact the drive has a Pioneer label on it. I bought one last month, and it is terrific--a full DVD disk can be burned in less than 15 minutes!

Disks are dropping in price, too. You can get Ritek CERTIFIED 4X blanks for about $2 a disk from www.hypermicro.com. I've burned about 15 of them so far in the past week, and they are perfect.
