I am lost here . I have been burning now for about 2 months and recently got Datawrite 4x disks and they all worked fine but i have run out of them and there seems to be a shortage of them everywhere so i went to use the same make but 1x and every time i get messages saying failed to burn at 2x. I cant change the speed in Nero or gear pro they automatically recognise them as 2x disks why this is i dont know but then they fail. Any help will be some. This is getting to me and i am at a lose, i have updated to the latest firmware so i dont knoe if this has made the difference i wouldnt have thought so as they are both datawrite disks. Cheers in advance.

Datawrite do not make their own discs, they rebadage other manufacturers discs, So thier 4x discs are likely to be made by ritek, while their 1x discs could be made by leda/optodisc/princo etc.

Yes, Datawrite 4X are Ritek G04.
I don't know what is Datawrite 1X;
Please use AdvInfo or DVDdecrypter to find the original manufacturer and post the result here.
Thx

Your problem is both the Pioneer and Nero. The Pioneer won't allow you to burn a 1x at 2x if it's not pioneer 2x approved. And Nero thinks the discs can be burnt at 2x (I think Nero has an automatic adjust speed option). Basically Nero is telling the Pioneer to burn at 2x and the Pioneer is only reading a 1x dvd and essentially saying "HELL NO". If you had a sony dru500a it will burn a 1x at 2x, but the pioneer won't.
Try using recordnow max or something besides Nero.
Read here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46399), here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46402), and here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46426). Try searching other threads also.
Just my 2 cents, I may be completely wrong. Let us know what happens.

It's probably a princo DVD, with a stolen TDK 2X manufacturer code on it.
And Nero has a good DVD burner handling but a crappy user inteface, default UDF format..
Try with ImgTool. It use Nero engine but handle it in a really better way.
Also use hacked firm 2x4all in order to choose the speed youwant, regardless of the media used.

just wanna check you if you talking about the 104 2x4all firmware, or were you referring to the 105 that BOB.T has?

Yes you are right, I forget it was on A05, not on A03/A04
No 2x4all for A05 at this time.

Oh well, guess I better put my 10 2x blanks back in the drawer for now cos my 105 sees them as 1x :(
thought I missed an updated hacked firmware for my 105 :)
: puts 15 2X(G03) blanks back in the drawer : :(

You can stil burn @ 1X. Anyway, for a perfect burn, you need to burn at a lower speed than the max speed advertised.
I burn 2X DVD-R @X1, 4X DVD-R @X2 (no choic anyway with my 103)
If you check my sticky thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36085 you can see some graph of DVDspeed.
I would add Ritek G03 @2X and Ritek G04 @2X soon.
The result is like Bulkpaq gen3v2 @X2 ...
Burning @X2 is not define in the specs, against X1 & X4 which are defined, that perhaps why.
I would be pleased if someone can burn @X4 a ritek G04 with imgtool and run DVDspeed on it, preferably on a pioneer DVD-116 to compare with my measurments

yep I could but I've got plenty of 4X here for now, so unless I run out of them or a hacked firmware is made available, then in the drawer they stay :)
Some people have apparently reported using the emergency eject tray trick them to start burning at higher speed, I tried but still no joy

I have a Samsung 16X & Liteon 16X & a Memorex 16X as I have one in each computer and I also have my friends comp at the moment (fixing as usual)
will this do?

is this any good ?
RITEK G04 burnt @ 4X (http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/icpic/sam.gif)
now do you reckon I should burn @ 2X to get a better result ? :D

Yep, result is perfect. Great to have so good burns @X4.
Do you have one burned @X2 to see if it's the same perfect curve ?
It can come also from the difference between pioneer 116 (which is not so good) and the Samsung.
I have same curves if reading with my 103 on nearly every disks.

Can burning a disc at faster speed really cause pixelation? I don't see why it would do that when it's only files being read, and if they can be read it should turn out the same shouldn't it?
