View Full Version : Is 320x240 OK?

I've searched these forums for the best resolution to caputre and resize to and now I'm very confused. I've read VERY long threads about different resolution/pixel factors and how many lines are REALLY there and how many something else... blah blah blah.

Right now I'm capturing very noisy VHS tapes at 640x480 and then resizing to 320x240 and encoding to divx. Is there anything "wrong" with this? Would one of those other resolutions be better (ie. not just chopping the x and y in half)? I just watch them with TV Out on my radeon. Any hints about a better capture / resizing resolution?

Thanks,

If you're capping from low quality VHS, what you're doing is pretty much the ideal way to go. Start with 640x480 to get as much resolution in as possible, then halve the resolution to crush the noise and make the size smaller. It's also easier to resize, and I believe Vdub has an actual filter that just cuts the resolution by two. This is a fast and high quality way to resize.

If size isn't an option, you might try bilinear resize to 512x384.
