I have some home movies on 8mm tape and also on VHS I would like to put onto my computer and then burn to DVD. I have a lot of necessary codecs, programs etc. Currently I have and can burn DVD9 movies by decrypting to HD, transcoding Transcode link (http://www.dvd2one.com) and then burn onto 1 DVD. I also have some programs from Nero for doing home movies from AVI.

What sort of hardware is recommended for doing the analog to digital thing into my computer for editing?

Home built Athlon XP 2000+ (overclocked) 512 MB ram, 80GB 133 ATA hard drive, Pioneer DVR-105 4X DVD burner, Toshiba DVD drive, Yamaha CD burner, USB satellite network and home network set up, 64MB Abit Siluro (nvidia) AGP video card, some free space on my computer for PCI cards. *S*

Thanks!!

The easiest way is using Dazzle Video Creator.
It comes in two models:

-Original DVC. USB or parallel connection. Resolution 352 x 240 MPEG-1 compression. Similar to VCD quality.

-DVC-II. It needs a PCI slot for a card included. Resolution 720 x 480 Mpeg-2 compression. Not as good as DVD but better than SVCD.

You can find more information about this products here:http://www.tigerdirect.com/

I bought a Hauppauge PCI card off ebay for little money and instlled it in my comptuer. I went to their website, Hauppauge and installed the latest drivers and such and also a few programs, one called WINTV2000. The systems seems to recognize the card and it does have imput capabilities on the back. The resolution seems to be in the way of 320 X 240 at 30 FPS see: http://www.hauppauge.com/html/avi_cap.htm

Is this enough resolution for capturing my home VHS tapes to be able to burn to DVD video?
Decoder is a BT878 decoder by the way.

Thanks!

A more expensive but better capture card would be the Canopus ADVC-100 or the Canopus ADVC-50. Another option is a digital 8 or miniDV camcorder with a passthrough feature (most Sony and Canon digital camcorders have this feature). The passthrough feature allows you to use the digital camcorder as a capture card.
