The 105 won't allow you to burn at 2X if the media isn't pioneer approved at 2X. For example: if you use ritek g03 media in the 105 it will burn at 1x. However, if you use the same media in a sony dru500ax it will burn at 2X. Even though the riteks are rated at 1X.
There are many more posts in here that cover this. Read on!

For maximum compatability with set top players burn at 1X...
Heck if you've just spent 6 - 8 hours of computer time to go through a rip/demux/encode/remux process what's the big deal of taking 50 minutes for the final product???

I burned a whole spindle of LeadData -R's at 2x (tho they're 1x approved, but burn at 2x in the DRU-500a), however from now on I'll probably burn at 1x unless I *REALLY* trust the media. (Apple 2x approved or something). Haven't had any problems tho burning at 2x, but the nero cd speed graphs generally are smoother for the 1x burns. Depends when my rentals are due back at blockbuster... :)

I just burn @ 2 speed, while using other strainious activities (CPU usage about 90%). The DRU500a has a build in cache so use it! :D

I burn a complete movie on my $167.00 4X CenDyne with Ritek 4X media I got a www.rima.com at around 18 minues. Plays fine in all the stand alones I've had the opportunity to try. I take them to friends and such and they play fine, even burned at 4X. I use Nero 5.5.10.7b UDF/ISO, Level 1, No Joliet, UDF 1.02, Also I have a recent ASPI version from Adaptec, 4.71.2 and also a nero WNASPI32.dll I got from Nero's web site. I think having all the right aspi and necesary dll files are quite useful for burning compliant DVDs..
Also I leave the room while burning. You know a DVD track is .76 Micron in width. Red blood cell is only 8 micron. Largest visible object to a human eye is somewhere around 38 micron.. and we're talking only .76 micron. I know I'm probably paranoid, but it sure looks like any major bumps and grinds.. or excessive vibration could (note not that it will) cause the laser to missalign something somewhere in the burn process.
Cheers!

No need to be overly cautious. I have found that I can work with my other programs just fine while burning at 4X on the Cendyne -05 (Ritek G04 disks). That's because it uses the "burn-proof" technology that has become standard-issue for CD burners.
A couple of days ago I had a hard drive problem, and noticed my DVD burner was running out of buffer every 5 seconds or so. No problem; the burner just stopped burning until the buffer was filled again, and then was able to pick up EXACTLY were it left off. I did a file compare afterwards--perfect copy.
The technology is finally coming together.

I payed DM 1149,- 14 months ago...
Cendyne never made own recorders.
Their 32x/40x CD Recorders are LiteOn,
48x are LiteOn or Benq or AOpen,
DVD recorders are Pioneer

I agree, having the right files and system setup does help as Nero has never created a coaster!, yet some people say don't use it, yet I use the DVD-Video, Level 1, ISO 9660, No Joilet and it work's everytime so I swear by it. The only coasters I've had are the ones when I was 1st learning about DVD backups

I do all sorts while I'm burning @4X with no effect to DVD's so I guess it's what your system can handle. The only affect I see is that if I open a memory hungry app like paintshop, it takes a fraction longer to open, but the buffer doesn't seem to be affected by much as it's paintshop that has to wait for system resources
Normally I just click burn then minimize Nero and use the computer as normal and 15mins later out the DVD pops :)

Got the CenDyne just after Christmas at Office Max. At the time the store had a 50.00 instant rebate so it made it $217.00 and then I got a 50.00 mail in rebate and that made it $167.00 there abouts. Windows, and BIOS recognize it as a Pioneer DVR-105 version and you can see the firmware and such at Pioneer's website for this drive. Works wonderful too! From rip using DVD Decrypter to transcode using DVD2ONE to burn with Nero 5.5.10.7b it's just around 87 minutes complete. Also, My Athlon XP processor is a Athlon XP 1600 Overclocked to 2000+ (1.667 GHz) and runs around 45C most of the time. air cooled. XP processors are a litte more touch to OC than the older thunderbird.. no pencil trick here. *S*
