I never usually do vbr encodings of mp3's. Right now I'm just doing tv captures and I only have mono so I've been encoding with mp3 64kbit cbr. I was thinking on trying vbr mp3 with the intention of not having better sounding audio in about the same space, but same quality compared to cbr but in a smaller file, so I can have more space available for video. Just as a test I tried the audio out of a tv show and encoded with lame. The show runs 21:13 secs, and at cbr is around 10 megs. With my attempts at vbr, no matter what settings I used I could only get it at about roughly 8.7 megs.
Is this typical file space savings from vbr? Or are there some recommended settings I could try to get a smaller file?
