After more and more off-topic postings in the Browser usage thread, I've decided to open a new thread for those who want to continue to discuss this.

Browser thread:

These treads usually lead to flame wars.:(
Same with AMD vs Intel or Coke vs Pepsi or Black vs White.
Lets keep it clean.

For what it's worth, I'm still running WinXP SP1 with IE uninstalled. Very stable:)
At first it had very bad experience with XP. I was using 2000 for a long time and a friend persuaded to try xp again. Haven't looked back since.

I have an old PC and was planning on using Linux on it at some stage just to get a flavour of something non-MS. Same friend suggested Redhat 7.2. What would you recommend?

How did you do this? Uninstalling IE in XP?
You mean you got rid of the desktop link? As far as I know, it is impossible to uninstall the IE in XP/2k. Please, proof me wrong!

I would love to dump the IE from my system. (I am using Win2k)

Oh, I think that is rather simple to do. Open up the control panel go to add/remove programs, then click on add/remove windows components and then find IE in the window and uncheck the box beside it and click next and it should be gone.

It's possible in win98 with this (http://www.litepc.com/download.html).
IIRC, you can do this in w2k as well by editing some .inf. But in xp removing desktop shortcut and file associations is indeed all you can do about it.
It's the part of OS after all. There's no clean painless way of actually remove it without 'hacking' system AFAIK.

...Yeah (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378):
Internet Explorer 6 is preinstalled by default in all versions of Windows XP.
[...] Microsoft has made it possible for OEMs, administrators, and users to remove user access to Internet Explorer while leaving the Internet Explorer code intact and fully functional to ensure the functionality of programs and operating system functions that rely on it.

As far as AMD vs Intel goes, members might be interested in reading this.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I want me an Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz HT. 97FPS Woohoo! I know they probably didn't use any filters, but thats still fast!

I use Mandrake 9. I tried RedHat 8 and didn't like it, stick with 7.2 and just update the packages. Both distros are easy to install and use.

This feature was introduced in SP1 for WinXP. MS were under pressure to do so. Yes, it's uninstalled and not just shortcuts. As far as I know it's not really possible under 2000.

I'm using Debian 'Woody' with a stock kernel (2.4.18-bf24) and FluxBox as WM. My browser is Mozilla 1.0 (...waiting for Phoenix-packages  ).
Unfortunately I don't know how to uninstall IE from my Debian-box... do you :D

btw, a screenshot of my (clean) desktop can be found here (http://tactx.kicks-ass.org/pics/desk1.jpg).

FluxBox? Never heard of it. Your screenshot looks like it is using the BlackBox WM. Did they change the name of the WM from pressure by another company? Say BlackBox inc. which manufactures Networking equipment and tel. co. muxes?

Knopix is good. There is no disto on DVD-R AFAIK. Because the bootable runnable CD's while really cool are more of a novelty and not extremely usefull. One self contained booting distro I like though is Movix. A distro which will likely find a quick place in the heart of any encoder.
