Is backing up to DVD any better than SVCD??

Ok, I have backed up a couple DVD's and DivX files to DVD disks, but someone told me that making a VCD or SVCD will give me just as good of quality is this true, am i wasting money on blank dvd's or is it better?

A little basic research on the formats would probably be in order.

Take a look at the chart at the bottom of this link (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/vcd). It's not a complete list of the possibilities, but it gives you a general overview.
