"You might ask why fight over a future format? Why not just choose the best one. The answer is pretty simple, money. Many electronic companies gets allot of money on royalties because of a patent in a format. Every time one decides to make a CD player money goes straight to Phillips and Sony's pockets because they own a patent in the CD format. The same with DVD and a future HD DVD format. That is why it is so important for the companies that the future format has technologies in it that they helped invent and design so they can get royalties everytime a product is made for the format."
