View Full Version : A couple of questions...

I have a few questions to ask.

The first is, when i encode a movie to divx, it comes out a LOT darker than the source when playing through say the divx.com player, or windows media player (panic room is totally unwatchable) However, on my mac, it comes through just fine, almost exactly the same as the source. I don't really want to mess with luminescene and contrast and such in DVD2AVI, as it really washes out the color, and i never really get it close to how the original looks. Anything i can do, encoding wise, or maybe player wise to enjoy a dark movie such as panic room?

Second question. i have a bunch of TV-series dvd that i would like to rip. How do i go about splitting up the episdoes from the vob files? or should i just encode the thing all at once and split it up once i have 1 large avi?

Thirdly, everyone seems to be switching to Xvid from divx...Which is better? Why are so many people flocking to xvid?

And finally, when i have my finished .avi, the blues and reds really seem to stand out as poor images. Am i doing something wrong where blues and reds come out really bad?

Thanks for your help guys!

Hi-

You can adjust the brightness in the overlay settings of your video card. Most players have a way to adjust the brightness (I don't use the 2 you mentioned, but it's easy enough in BS Player). Or you can adjust the brightness setting in your .avs with the Tweak Filter before encoding. Or decode using ffdshow (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe). It has tons of settings you can adjust.

How do i go about splitting up the episdoes from the vob files?

Not enough information. If you're ripping using SmartRipper, then you rip in Movie Mode. If you use DVDDecrypter, then you use IFO Mode. The episodes are usually in their own PGC. If not, then you rip by Chapters.

...Which is better?

You don't ask which is better. You run your own tests and decide for yourself. Check Rule 12 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

blues and reds come out really bad

I don't know anything about bad blues and reds. If you're watching them on your television, then adjust your settings. Maybe someone else can help.

For blues and reds, they come out really over exposed and very blocky. For example, the opening scene in monsters inc, the blue color of the room at night realy comes out looking really bad.

Thanks for your other help though, I appreciate it!

ok as manono said, you have to decide for youself which codec to use, but here's a little help from doom9 (: he did a codec comparison. it is not the newest one but take a look anyway. it's comparing divx 5.02, divx 3.11 SBC, Xvid and RV9 (Realvideo) codec comparison (http://www.doom9.org/codec3-1.htm)

oh and for the blues and reds? have you ever tried playing the movie on another computer? i'm just thinking that you kind of screwed up some playback filter - because of the darkness and the colorprobs; so just try ffdshow, and if this doesn't help and the movies play fine on other computers you might think about reinstalling your OS or switching to win2k/XP if you're using 9x !!
