Greetings all:)
Just a Newbe here :p
I am trying to figure out what determends final file size of a encoded movie. In Gknot there is a selection button for 1,2,3 cd's.
When i encode using the different settings the final movie comes out the same. I would like to ask for some help on this cause i just don't seem to get it. what i'm looking to do is make movies around the 2 cd size 1400k. If i understand what I have read is that the less compress id do the better the overall look of the movie. Is this true? How do i set the amount of compressing Gknot will preform.
Were do i go to read about this? thankx for any help. :D

Hi-

Just a Newbe here

Nothing wrong with that-we've all been there. It's tough being low man on the totem pole, eh?

When i encode using the different settings the final movie comes out the same.

Different settings for what? The file size? If so, then you probably maxed out the file size. Read Acaila's Sticky About Undersized Files (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24584).

If i understand what I have read is that the less compress id do the better the overall look of the movie. Is this true? How do i set the amount of compressing Gknot will preform.

Yes, it's true. The best possible quality (for DivX 5.02) will be a 1 pass quality based encode at quant 2 with no B-Frames. But you'll have to do that directly in VDub and you'll lose control of the final file size. GKnot is for getting the best quality for a given file size by using 2 pass VBR methods. However, if you're consistently getting undersized files (not making the 2 CDs that you want), then you are very near to having constant quant 2, and therefore maximum quality already (for your resolution). In GKnot, you don't set the compressibility as such. You set the file size you're aiming for, or the bitrate, and the average quant follows from that. The way to determine if you'll reach the size you want is to do the Compression Test in GKnot before running the 2 passes.

If I've misunderstood anything, please provide some more information.

Thankx for the link:)
If i read it correctly it sounds like turning B-Frams off will still give me a good looking movie and a much bigger file. So will it be 2X larger? witch will probley make it over 2 cd's and then turn res down to make it fit. i'll give this a try!

Hi-

So will it be 2X larger?

No, probably only 20% or so larger. You might also try and give the movie a larger resolution, or put it on 1 CD. Sounds like it might just be very compressible.
