I have a friend who would very much like to backup some movies he has but doesn't realy know very much about computers. I've tried a couple of times to teach him how to make a divx file but it's just impossible. Therefore I was wondering if anyone knew of a program where you just put the dvd in the drive, press "GO" and the program would then make a standard 640*xxx divx file at 700mb without the need of calculating bitrate, choosing audio, resolution, resizing and so fourth. Any help would be much appreciated :-)

*Ahum*,
Try Xmpeg or FlaskMPEG, and use the guide from Doom9.
For newbies, I think this is the most simple way. (But the people generally agree that the quality is "not optimal", so try it out for yourself.
P.S. I think the latest dvdX is also pretty straightforward ...
Search the forum for more info. (i'm not really into svcd-stuff)
I hope that helped you a bit.
bye!

I use DVDx myself and have tried out GordianKnot some times, but the problem is that even these 2 programs are pretty difficult to teach people how to use.

Hi, I think you can try NeoDivx. I've used this once to show to my colleague how simple and straightforward could be and the result was not bad at all...
Look here:

and download the free NeoDivx and not Divx Video Duplicator

What about FairUse?
IIRC there's not much you can do wrong with this all-in-one tool.
There is no need to install other apps, it even has built-in ripping and the proper codec is embedded in the exe.

I made a fairuse pack over a year ago - i sent it to doom9 & digital digest but they weren't interested. try it here :- http://www.johnblox.eurobell.co.uk/ Its all prolly a bit out of date now what with div5 etc, though coming back here after a year I'm not so sure, dvd->dix is as convoluted as it ever was. Your granny however should be able to follow this guide. its vbr->1 cd with no messing/decisions 4 u. hard work is the apps this prog just automates it. But dont worry some day soon someone will write a dvd->divx app with a single button I'm sure, though by then divx will prolly have been supersceded

Gordian Knot is a good one too, a few user guides (including my own) were mentioned here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45295)

He could try my ''Idiots guide to DVD quality DivXs''. It is VERY VERY easy and will produce 2 CD DivX movies that are VERY near DVD quality. Plus its pretty fast, on a half decent PC it should only take 2-3 hours to encode.
