I apologise in advance for this posting - I am sure the answer lies somewhere on this sight. I was wondering if it is possible to convert over the ac3 five channel file of a DVD to mp3 and have the same surround effect without using Dolby Pro Logic or S/PIF.

If not, can an ac3 file be downsampled somewhat in order to reduce it's file size?

I ask the question as I notice that Power DVD XP supports 'muti-channel Mp3s' whatever that is.

Cheers,

Welcome to the board

You can't put full 5.1 into an mp3, you can use Dolby PL2 which gives you 4 channels I believe, if you want to down sample the ac3 to say 256 kbp/s then have a look at ac3 machine by DSPguru. http://dspguru.doom9.org

Oh..

and go read the guides, there are lots of them.

Have fun

Thanks for the advice, ivan. AC3 machine seems to be exactly what I was hoping to find.

I don't have much confidence in Pro Logic 2.

Man, things have changed since the last time I was DiVXing - about two years ago. ;)
