2. this should take about 90mins to frank to do this.
(and take about a week or two for outsiders).

Besides, Frank is always shooting in all directions.
Lately, he's been working on an AC3 decoder. :D

An AC3 Decoder? For what do we need another one? There is liba52 (opensource GPL) and azid (closed source with API).
But we donīt have one really good mp2 encoder. There is toolame, but itīs very buggy, quality could also be better and it doesnīt seem to be developed anymore. Thatīs not only very useful for VCD/SVCD, also for portable devices, most mp3-players play mp2, too (at least my old one, my new one and the one of my brother, all cheap ones). This could mean great quality, similar to MusePack, at ~256kbps, better than mp3 at 256kbps.
Frank, if you read that and if that isnīt too much work, please create a good mp2-encoder based on MusePack!

Ask him! :D
All I know is some talk I read at #hydrogenaudio.
It seems he's not pleased with liba52

I found out that liba52 is better, exspecially it can handle VBR-AC3 perfectly, azid just produces crap. Also when file is out of sync, azid cannot resync again, while with liba52 it works perfect.
But you cannot use liba52 in your program anyway, because itīs GPL and your program is closed-source.
Maybe Iīll PM Frank (he always seems to be very busy).
Edit: I found the post again and he said, he has already programmed one: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?act=ST&f=15&t=1189
I already asked him when he is planning to release it.

AFAIK mp2 has lower quality than mp3 at the same bitrate

Hrm... that's a tricky one.
Indeed, for low bitrates, MP2 is generally worse than MP3.
But, due to the algorithms used (subband coding instead of MDCT), at high bitrates it's easier for MP2 to archive transparency where MP3 chokes.

Correct. I do have the sources here on my HDD if anybody is interested, he also added DRC support lately. Frank and DA started a dialogue about adding MPC support into HeadAC3he lately, but it seems it led to nowhere as DA was requesting a mpcenc.DLL and Frank was of the opinion an .exe is just fine :D
For anybody interested in looking at MPC, stay tuned for SV8 encode and framing, he is about to make some very big changes to the format. He told us to wait for SV8 with MPC integration into matroska, as the cahnges between SV7 and SV8 will be so radical, it would need a complete rewrite, like supporting 2 different formats. He himself will make a SV7 to SV8 conversion tool to support elder files, we plan to integrate this tool into the mpc2matroska.exe so only SV8 streams will find their way into matroska files ....

Great! He wrote that SV8 will maybe have the possibility to write mp2 files, too. Do you know if this will be implemented?
Do you know why he wrote this ac3 decoder? I donīt see any reason.

he also thought about writing a mpc->dts (bitstream) transcoder.

I'm very much interested indeed and really glad to hear that matroska will be able to handle mpc or SV8 streams.
Btw, personally, I wouldn't compare even the highest quality 320kbps (insane) mp3 (or any other sort of lossy compression) to the invincible quality of >240kbps (BrainDead) MusePack mpc :D.
