View Full Version : Diagnostic filter proposal

These days I was playing around some PSNR quality valutations among my clips when i think:
PSNR gives me a quantitative idea of my clips' overall quality and is an essential tool, but what are things that everyone want to minimize on their videos?

I think the macroblock and mosquito artifacts are the first thing one that everyone can notice in a non-perfect video encoding (eccessive burring is the third, but it's easy to solve and to evaluate)

So a filter that can detect the amount of scenes that comes with this 2 artifact's type would be useful for valuating first these macroscopic artifacts (that in my opinion are the first that everyone want to erase from their encodings), and only in a second time you may test fine changes effects with psnr.

I think it could be useulf a filter that analyzes one clip frame by frame and gives in output:

1)an absolute measure for the total evident macroblock finded
2)a distribution graph of macroblock on every frame (this could help to quickly find those scenes mostly affected by the artifact and reencode only them)
3)the same two things for the mosquito effect

I can't code a like-this filter because i don't know any programming language, i like only to know your impressions on this argument and, if someone likes to code it... i'll be the first supporter :)

Thanks for your spent time, arigatou!
