I just made my first rip under linux with transcode, the result is quite good (although in some scenes, the image looks "striped" for some seconds. But in transcode I chosed XviD as codec but when I play it with mplayer or under windows inspect it with gspot it says that the codec is opendivx 4. Is this normal?

What (imho) happened is that transcode put the 'wrong' fourcc into the avi file (not 'xvid' but 'divx'). Don't ask me why ^^'

ok, thanks for the answer, I don't go to ask you why, but if someone knows if it is possible to playback the file using the XviD codec, I would like to know, because now the judgement of the file (using fourcc divx4) doesn't give a right image I suppose

The thing (in linux world) is the fourcc is not that important.
The player see Divx or Xvid fourcc, so it is mpeg4.
It uses the preferred mpeg4 codec (ffmpeg/lavcodec usually)
(unless forced).
That's what mplayer does, and i'm pretty sure aviplay does the same, as xine.
So your file will be played fine.
