View Full Version : VobSub 2.23 bug ?

Hi.
I am experiencing the following probem with the latest version of Vobsub (v 2.23). When I open the ifo file through VobSub in order to create the .sub file, although VobSub correctly detects the subtitle streams in the Select PGC window, when I hit OK, after indexing, all subtitle streams appear as <Not Detected> and the output .sub file is 0 KB in size !?!
This only happens with the FRIENDS DVDs and The X-Files DVDs so far. However in the past, using v 2.03 of vobsub, I was able to create subtitles for FRIENDS without any problem.
What is going on ? Perhaps someone could also post a link to v 2.03 of VobSub so I can download it and install it instead of the latest one ?
Thanks.

How did you rip the vobs? Have you tried indexing the dvd?

I used Smart Ripper to rip the vobs. Indexing the DVD ? I don't know what that means... Sorry. However the problem is now solved by using Vobsub 2.18.

Smartripper deletes navigation packets from the vobs if you uncheck the 0x?? stream (they are needed now to extract the timestamps more precisly than ever before and for complex cases), try to avoid that. Indexing the dvd meansyou select the ifo directly from the dvd, it is always better to use the original vobs.

Ok thanks. I'll keep that in mind and use DVDDecrypter from now on. However I think I will also stick with Vobsub 2.18.
Thanks a lot for the help.

I have also had this problem with 2.23. I'm not too sure if I'm right, but it seems because in 2.23, it differentiates between the "Program Chain No. #". For some reason, NOT all subs in a DVD (in my case) are all in Program Chain No. 1, which is the default selection.
In the past, we don't need to choose which program chain, so we ended up leaving as it is. However, in some of these cases, the subs it was reffering to earlier in the process are in a different Program Chain (Ie: Program Chain # 2). If that's the case, then if you try to rip that certain Program Chain, there's no subtitle in there, therefore, empty .sub file.
I had an experiment on this (using DVD Decrypter). I had this one case where when I tried to rip the subtitles off the VOB files in my hd, it showed it has English and Chinese. So, I didn't change the Program Chain, leaving it in # 1. Then after finished indexing, There's no sub identified.
Afterwards, I went on and change the Program Chain to # 2, then do the re-indexing again. After that, the subs are detected, and I can use resync to confirm it's there.
I was curious whether 2.18 will work in this case, so I uninstall 2.23, restart, and then install 2.18. Tried the same thing (without selecting program chain), and it worked flawlessly.
The good thing about 2.18 is it doesn't differentiate between Program Chain 1 / 2 / etc. It just takes what its given, look for the sub, and Rip it off (in my low low understanding of VobSub). I'm pretty sure Gabest have a good reason on introducing the Program Chain feature, but it seems that because of that feature, on some cases, it does confuse people (like me at first  ).
So, like what iparout said, I'm also sticking with 2.18, since it worked all the time (for me). Not asking for anything, this is only my opinion and based on my experiences with VobSub.
Gabest: Keep up the good work! (I also use Windows Media Classic => my one and only player :D ).

What vob/cell ids were in pgc 1 and 2? They should have been totally different, because selecting pgc is just altering this list of ids. But then I don't understand how you could rip the subtitles from a different section of the movie (pgc2) and match it with another part (pgc1).

No Gabest you're right. It's just me that didn't really read the tutorial in all its fine details. I think you're suppose to (when you rip a dvd using DVD Decrypter), you suppose to notice the PGC # that you're ripping, and then match it during the subtitle ripping process. Is this right? i don't have that DVD that was giving me this problem right now, so i couldn't test. Sorry I guess I made a mistake (and i never said it's a bug anyway ..).

No prob, but some other reports similar to yours are never solved and I'm just scratching my head then :)
