Hi. I have a Firewire HDTV DSS Receiver and was wondering if anyone knows of a program that I can use to capture the HDTV video directly off the DSS reciever instead of capturing it on my HDTV VCR first. To capture it off the VCR, I use a direct-show based program that can only read it from the VCR and not the receiver directly.
The reason for needing this is that when the video is put on the VCR, a few frames get corrupt, and virtualdub crashes half way though processing when I try to convert the file into DivX.
Any comments/suggestions???

I don't think there is unfortunately, at least not yet. Firewire outputs are encrypted, and they have yet to be cracked. Do you think Hollywood would just give you acess to digital, mpeg2 encoded HD streams? The data rate of encoded HDTV is something any computer would easily capture, without quality loss.

Hmm. Well the streams have to be cracked at one point because when I record from DSS to my Digital VHS recorder the steam gets decrypted through a small linux computer that I bought. The program to record from my dVHS to computer does not support the direct recording from DSS to computer.
Someone should write a direct show filter to record the decrypted signal from firewire to computer.

Do you have more info on this? I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to capture mpeg2ts from a BS-Digital (jap hdtv standard) tuner via the firewire port. I know people have done it before by recording from the tuner to DVHS then playing back DVHS to record to PC, but that seems a little overkill. (not to mention expensive and pointless, DVHS was dead before it even arrived)

I'm not too worried about DVD-+R/RW killing DVHS anytime soon, not until BlueRay is in use, which won't be for a while yet.

Would you care to post your receiver's brand and model?
