I have bough the pioneer 105 got it today .I am using nero 5.5.10 .
I have tried as a demo to copy a 4.25 gig dvd.I thought I could do a straight dvdcopy with this.
When I try this it says medium is blank or invalid. please insert original medium.required source dvd.medium type in source Empty.
i thought that as long as it not dual layered and under 4.3 you could straight copy.
I am new to dvd but have been using dvd2svcd and copying with deamon tools for a year or so .I would like a simple solution like the method of svcd conversion.

For single layer DVD's (DVD-5) use DVD decrypter in iso read/write mode.

Agreed, I had several problems with Nero and standalones as well when I started burning DVDs a few weeks ago.
No reason to fight with Nero when there's a freeware app that will do what you want with no hassle.
Just make your ISO with ImgTools and/or DVD Decryptor and burn with DVD Decryptor.

I also agree that Nero has issues.
What I have used lately with great success has been
RecordNow Max.
Nero would only work in 2/3 players while RecordNow Max
works in all 3 without a problem.
I would use DVD decrypter, but you need to make an image first with another program and sometimes I just want to burn the directories.
I am just lazy I guess.

thanks for the replys.like mark i want the(lazy)simplest option .certainly to start as you get comfortable with nthat and an understanding you can then try different methods if it gives either better results or quicker.
Mark reordnow max is that freeware or puchased.any more info greatly appreciated.

I decided not to use the wizard did drag and drop the audio
file went accross immediatly and the video ts put a progress bar up and took some time to load .
when finished I then burnt dvd all ok. although unlike the original it wont play in my
standalone yamaha 520.plays on pc fine went round to mates plonked it in cyberhome played fine.
methinks dvd disc compatability problem the the datawrite 4x will not play on my standalone.it says double protection system i wonder.when i bought discs they say ok for pioneer 105 any ideas on the discs. My yamaha does play dvd- that was also the source i was copying from.I am going to try recordnow max as soon as poss. ;)

If you look around at other's problems/questions you'll notice many having the same results that you did. It seems that the "cheapo" DVD players out there are often just PC DVD-ROM drives thrown into a smaller box with the controller, whereas the higher end DVD standalones are often redesigns from the ground up with proprietary hardware that's picky about burned DVDs.
So, oddly enough, the cheapest DVD standalones often yield the most compatibility with burned DVDs.
What brand/model of media are you using (if you open up DVD Decryptor in write mode it'll give you an ID on the media)?

Well, I can only second that using ImgTools to make an image and then dvddecrypter to burn will work flawlessly (although I am lazy too). It will take about 50 minutes to complete the whole stuff on 1x dvd-Rs and about 30 minutes on 2x so, no big deal, just get a few good beers while waiting...
Plus, once the image file is done, you can test it before burning by mounting it with for example Daemon Tools, and verify every single part of the future DVD...
Plus, when the image is done, you can directly burn another copy for the good old Waldok :D

media datawrite 4.7 gb general purpose dvd-r 4x speed.(datasafe media ltd)
despite how lazy one wants to be theres work involved .
I installed recordmax now looks good put in original to back up.Lethal weapon 4 kicked the disc out as cannot read may be dirty try claening.tried lethal 1&2&3 and cleaned them all.
all the same so i tried to read from the dvd burner.and i got this as an explanation.
Error While Copying a Disc
Not all discs can be copied. For example, some DVDs and music CDs are created with a copy-protection feature. Discs
created with packet-writing software such as DLA (Drive Letter Access) also cannot be copied.
Be sure the disc you are trying to copy is not copy-protected and was not created with packet-writing software.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note Packet-writing software allows you to copy files to a recordable CD or DVD disc by dragging the files to the
disc window or icon. The software is provided with many new computers and disc recorders.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So back to nero drag and drop progress bar then burned dvd.nothing but green screen and blocks.Originalfile system udf when copied cdfs.
so how do you check if a dvd is copy protected and if it is then is it safe to assume it has to be ripped and encoded before burning .I am going to have to refer to some tutorials.
any comments appreciated

just a guess sounds like your trying to do a dvd backup without
decrypting it?
it needs to be on your hard drive first
dont even try and use your burning software to extract
unless its dvddecrypter
maybee i missunderstood u?

I am new to dvd been doing dvd to svcd for a year or so.theres quite a lot to understand my first dvd copy had some probs but I have it done just some media incompatibility with my stadalone and the reading of my dvds (as described above).and getting to understand the software a bit more.I am unaware of dvd protection what to look for etc.I thought if it was under 4.7 gig you could do a straight copy yes .You did understand me.
Some questions may be very basic and I am not against a search for any peticular problems but as a complete novice to dvd I want to:
Find the simplest way to back up my dvds
(Dvd2svcd that was agreat simple start to svcd)
Are all retail dvds protected .If not can you tell which are.
can all under 4.7 gig be copied from harddrive without any decryting.
Can you copy directly with dvddectypter
Where is the best tutorial.
Many thanks

Thanks very much for that reecycup. The more you look the more you find.Got this info.
It is NOT recommended to use Nero. Tests have revealed that Nero does not make 100% compliant DVD-video
disks, and numerous DVD players will not play disks made with Nero. We have had good results with
RecordNow by Veritas and PrimoDVD by Prassi.
