I was wondering if anyone knew how to playback the audio that comes on a DTS theatrical disk on the PC. I know it can be played back with DTS processing hardware, because that's the way the theatre plays it back. My initial goal is to make an MP3 or WAV from these files, but the 1st step is just to get them to play. The Cd is setup like this. There is one Dir called DTS and one DTS.EXE. Inside the DTS dir there are 5 files. R3T5.AUD-R7T5.AUD. My research has brought me to a dead end. Any help would be great.

what are those files you are talking about ?
AlterEgo
3rd December 2002, 19:38
Those files are the audio files on the disk. I'm looking for a way to decode them without having to buy a DTS processor. I imagine the DTS.EXE is there to keep the audio in sync with the film reels. The R3T5.AUD is an audio file the 3 is the reel number it belongs to.

Power DVD and winDVD didn't recognize the file format. Wavlab opened it, but there was nothing but static. I don't imagine Wavlab is DTS compatible.

as far as you know, does those .aud files includes only audio ?
please cut the first 900kb of those files and attach in here.

DTS cinema is a different format. We cannot use any DTS consumer decoders for that format. They are not really compatible. Actually we may use these decoders because they are designed for that format:
http://www.dtsonline.com/cinema/products.html
DTS cinema is just like SDDS. Both of them are meant to be used in a real cinema. Home theaters have their own formats. We are not supposed to use consumer decoders for a cinema format.

Read the Film Sound History if you like. The table and timeline are pretty cool.

So is there absolutely no way to decode that audio track on a PC? would I have to have the DTS cinema processor to decode that audio?
DIggedy
5th December 2002, 23:04
Yes that's right only a cinema dts decoder will be able to decode the files. Even then, does cinema hardware have standard rca-type outputs for recording the channels?
Out of curiosity, what film's dts track is on the disc?
AlterEgo

Star Wars EPII. I also have disks for movies that haven't started as of yet. They get in the theatre about a month in advance at most times.

Damn! Now that would make for a cranking dvd soundtrack if it could be transfered! Ep II in full bit rate DTS!

You would be pretty much famous in the scene if you released major (and i mean MAJOR) movies like LOTR or SW ep2 with a full 5.1 track telecined yourself, or just stolen digitally...
just a though ;)

Hello,
I have read alot about this problem, but I did not find any solution. Is there any way to decode the audio files on such a cinema cd without having the decoder hardware ?
The cd(s) contains many .aud files and a dts.exe that is some kind of frameserver. I read that it is only possible to play the audio directly in connection with the timecodes from the movie. It that true?
Perhaps someone knows a tool to decode the .aud files (its is not that westwood file format).
I also found a project called in_dtsc, that is dealing with the problem. Unfortunatly they are in very early steps.

Any help appreciated.

Here you can read what is the difference betwwen Home cinema DTS and theatrical cinema DTS audio. The bottomline is thyt cinema DTS is not PCM stream, but a ADPCM.
If the algorithm of decoding this stream can be done with a software, copying the procedure what the hardware does in cinema, it can be done. we only need that software :(

I have a few of these mystery CDs also, along with several film trailers (2:30 long, scope format). The person I got them from (works at theater) told me that they automatically sync with the correct film trailer when played. He just puts the disc in the dts decoder, and it outputs the correct audio for whatever film preview is being played (each disk contains all of that week's preview sound tracks). On the preview discs there are a couple of text files in the DTS folder along with one 650meg .AUD file.
A small snippet from these text files...

Have looked at sourceforge.net site, doesn't seem to be much known yet. Any ideas?
Also the DTS cds are labeled 'For use in DTS unit, DTS-6D & DTS-6AD only', the 35mm film is labeled SR/SRD/SDDS/DTS

As others have said, the only way to decode the .aud file is with a DTS cinema processor like the DTS-6. The DTS used theatrically and in the home are completely different. It would be like trying to decode a DTS DVD with a Dolby Digital processor. In other words, it will not work. Again, I figure some sort of software could be made to emulate whatever the DTS-6 does.
As far as the labels on the 35mm film goes, here are some definitions:
SR = Spectral Recording. Equivalent to Pro-Logic in the home.
SRD = Dolby Digital
DTS = DTS Digital Sound
SDDS = Sony Dynamic Digital Sound
Check out www.film-tech.com for more info.

HI!
Was searching around for some software and know what?
www.aptx.com look under Product->Software then you have 2 possibilities Monaco Standalone software or a Cool Edit Pro plugin for $150. Will this plugin read these dts cinema cds?

Hello, did you try this software which was suggested ? Did it play those dts files?

Hi!
Didn't have the possibility to try it , because I don't have the 150 bucks for this now. I've even "searched" the other way, but didn't found anything.
If someone owns this software, please try it.

Well, I do not know if that software is illegal, I heared it is not a crack or warez, but coded by some individuals. How do you know it is illegal? However, if you are right, sorry for that...
The removed parts from my post seem not fair to me, as I doubt you have any proof this software is illegal (like I don't have one it is not) - still I don't care very much.

In enforcing the forum rules we have to err on the side of caution, to protect our community and the hard work put into it by the founder and its members. We do not want to give anyone the slightest possibility of an excuse to shut down this site.
Based on the wording of your post it sounded very clearly like a warez software. Release groups generally do not release legal software.

Ok, whatever, let it be an illegal release. If this is the case, there must be also a LEGAL option to obtain it. However this software EXISTS, and this is all I wanted to say. And since it exists, someone HAS actually coded it.

Well hi,
I surely regret that I don't know the exact program anymore that was able to load .aud files. I first thought at Cooledit pro 2. And after that Sonic foundry 6 or xp 5. I have seen it somewhere but I cant remember it anymore. Well I haven 't taken the effort to check these programs. As far cooledit pro 2.1 goes, it doesn 't recognizes .aud files. If you are in the mood you could check the others. But I don 't promise anything.
For your information.

There is a software that decodes .aud extensions. Even though there is no legal license agreement on APTX's decoder, I will not mention the name as I don't want to break forum rules. I do not have the program, but you can make searches on the net trying these informations, or email me.
