View Full Version : muxing AC3 2.0 and 5.1 audio streams in OGM

Hi everybody (specially you, Cyrius...)

I have commented in many other threads that when you mix 5.1 AC3 and 2.0 vorbis, playback with the vorbis audio streams selected becomes painful, as it tends to freeze, specially when seeking (it results almost impossible to seek).

I tried converting the stereo audio streams to AC3 2.0, since I had seen that ac3-only OGMs worked flawlessly. So I transcoded the streams, muxed them together using latest VirtualDubMod, and tried to play it.

Now stereo playback is OK, but when I switch to a 5.1 audio stream, the sound just doesn't work. It sounds just an annoying noise. I am using latest Zoom Player.

If I have a look at the property page of the audio rendering device that Zoom Player uses, which is the Default Directsound Device, one can see some data of the audio stream being played currently, like for instance the number of channels. Well: when a 2.0 stream is played everything is OK (the number of channels is 2 detected by the renderer is 2), but when I switch to a 5.1 stream, the number of channels still is 2. I mean that the data doesn't change. Somehow the renderer does not detect the change of stream topology. Also, the statistics tab of the property dialog goes crazy. Values change quickly and have strange values. I have tried to use other audio renderers (creating graphs with graphedit), but I get the same problem with all of them.

SO: I head to the previous filter, Valex' ac3Filter. When switching audio it detects the number of channels correctly, but it also gets crazy. The previous element is Tobia's OGG demuxer.

Either the demuxer cannot handle that (which results strange, since it can manage 2.0 vorbis plus 5.1 ac3, yet with the freezing thing said above), or VirtualdubMod created a bad OGM file because of some
strange, still undiscovered bug. I suspect the latter.

Anybody out there willing to help a tired video fan?

Thanks!

P.S.: enabling all streams in the demuxer is even worse.

Your not the first to report this. I have read many similar threads when Tobias created the new OggDS0995. Im sure that it's related to the filter and not VdubMod, have you tried muxing them in OggMux by Koepi? I think you'll find you get the same results. ;)
