Hi!

I'm trying to merge several .mpg files to create one vcd.

Tmpgenc 2.59.47.155 demo version (mpeg-2 trial period expired)
Windows XP and Windows 2K
9 Gigs of free space
512K DDR Ram

I've got the following problem: Every time I select a start and end point to cut a .mpg file, when I press OK, tmpgenc crashes. I get this same problem with merging. This happens in both XP and 2K (same machine but dual boot). I can use the wizard to cut the .mpg file and it works. It takes allot longer, but it's free, so thats okay. I was hoping to merge a few .mpg files, but I am not able to do this. When I press Run, tmpgenc crashes. Does anybody know of a work arround in tmpgenc? The wizard does not support merging, as far as I know.

Thanks!
Ron

Look at this answer from Pegasus Inc:

>I am capturing TV prefering directly in MPEG2. Editing files (excluding ads) in TMPGEnc using File > MPEG Tools. When I try to use the time line or just setting time where to cut I often get a system breakdown. Have you got any advices on how to avoid this?

Dear Customer,

AVI1.0 does not support the file of 2 gbs or more.
AVI2.0 supports the file of 2 gbs or more.
However, when the hard disk is FAT32 form, the file can be enlarged only up to 4 gbs also with AVI2.0.
If it is NTFS form, animation can be produced until the hard disk is filled.

I have all my partitions formatted with NTFS. Could it be that tmpgenc does not work well with NTFS? Maybe it can only handle FAT32?

@kajan
the email from Pegasus Inc. referes to avi file format.
What they say is true but where talking about mpg file here.
Only limitation for file size really is file-system (e.g fat, ntfs)
Welcome to the forums by the way.;)

@rawn
Works for me under a similar platform to your own.
Probably just the mpgs you are using.
Filesystem does not concern Tmpgenc.
Try bbMPEG instead (download section)
Also welcome to forum :p

It's good to know tmpgenc supports ntfs.
Thank you for the suggesting bbmpeg.
I'll try bbmpeg later and post my results.

Thanks!

Yes, its all about mpeg (in my case standardized SVCD capture w/pinnacle). My wonder about Pegasus Inc. was only why it looks like a random picked answer. The reason for crashes... Could it be that mpeg2 compression deals with streaming, instead of frames?

And thanks for the welcoming, I´ve been reading for some time now, and its a great society here, lots of knowledge :)

I've tried bbmpeg.
I used two files I cut from tmpgenc, both are mpeg-1 vcd quality.
The files created by tmpgenc are fine when played individually.
I then used bbmpeg and added both files.
I saved the output file as vcd in the settings.
I set the Program Stream Settings to VCD and left everything to the defualts.
When I played the output file from bbmpeg, the sound was very choppy and it appears as though some frames may have been lost.

Except for setting the Program Stream Settings to VCD, I used all the defaults with respect to bbmpeg's video/audio settings. Should I be doing something more?

Thanks!

The official explanation from Pegasus for crashes when merging/editing:

"The file which is not normally treatable of the MPEG tool is a Mpeg file which comes off from the Mpeg standard. A non-standard Mpeg file is made from the software Mpeg capture.
Being possible to process it normally by the MPEG tool of TMPEGEncPLUS is a Mpeg file generated with TMPEGEncPLUS. The file generated with other software etc. cannot guarantee operation."

Any comments or experiences?

I am using the ATI Multimedia Center Version 7.7 to capture the home movie. I am capturing with VCD quality.
NTSC
VIDEO CD
TYPE: MPEG-1
VIDEO: 352X240 NTSC(525) 1.13M BIT/SECOND
AUDIO: 44.100 KHZ, 16 BIT, STEREO

What I am confused about is I was able to cut and merge with TMPGENC a video I captured with the above statistics. Now, using the same video, I cannot cut and merge anymore.

Does anyone know if the Roxio cd burner software can interfere with TMPGENC? I did apply a patch to it. That is apporiximately when I think TMPGENC stopped working for the cut/merge feature.

Thanks,
Ron

Hi rawn,
probably of no value to you, but today I recieved further explanations from Tomonari Okada at Pegasys Inc:

"Unite (cut)" function uses Microsoft DirectShow for a specified preview of cut beginning point and end point.
The seek of the VBR-MPEG file cannot be correctly done with Microsoft DirectShow. Even if the image at the cutting specification position is displayed in the preview, the display image is not necessarily a thing at a specified position.

I cant realize how your patch can influence here, what Tomonari explains is probably only related to the bad precision of time/frame searchs/settings.

regards
