im trying to recompress some avi files at dvd resolution around 1000kbit and was very pleased with the results tmpeg gives me. (picture is good enough for me) but its a little bit slow :D .
so i tried cce (3pass vbr) with various settings/matrices/filtering but the results are not as good as tmpegs, its more blocky even at non-action scenes.

anybody have some tips/settings that i can try for such low bitrates in cce ?

I use CCE to encode divx avi (source bitrate between 900-1100) with "standard" matrix on a one-pass vbr Q60 min: 0 max: 8000. The results have been just great for me, no need for multiple passes I just wanted the same quality as the divx and it gave it to me :)

I get blockiness with some avi's if I set "upper field first" even though bitrateviewer tells me the original has this feature. If I re-encode with upper field first disabled, the blockiness disappears, maybe that accounts for it in your case.
