View Full Version : avisynth.org new server is up!

Just in time for the 2.5 beta; I have a feeling the SF server would choke if any major sites linked to us.
The new DNS will take about an hour to propagate. In the meantime, nobody mess with the Wiki -- your changes will be lost! In particular, it looks like SiWalters made an edit after I copied the DB...I'll reproduce the diff here temporarily...
[edit -- removed]
The new IP is 216.127.92.60; the old one is 66.35.250.210. From a browser, you can tell you're on the new server if the stupid text below "AboutAviSynth" on the left pane is gone. Also, it should be much faster. Other than that, there should be no difference...
...yet. There are tons of things that can be done with a "real" server that seem really cool, at least to someone used to Sourceforge. Mailing lists (majordomo) take literally 10 seconds to set up, and a full-blown bulletin board wouldn't be much harder. Email addresses (real accounts, not forwarding) can be offered, as well as shell accounts and FTP/WWW space.
In case anyone's waiting with baited breath for the promised file-hosting application, here's what it will (probably) look like: http://www.duke.edu/~jrb/filehosting.png. Files would be web-accessible via something like http://www.avisynth.org/files/coder_name/plugin.zip.
If nobody minds using plain old FTP, however, it's incredibly easy to just grant ordinary accounts. In that case, anything you uploaded to /home/your_name/html would show up at http://www.avisynth.org/~your_name/whatever.zip.
Back to the website proper, it's now much easier to fiddle with things. Comments on anything from layout & organization down to silly typos is appreciated. (Then again, you can fix typos yourself :))

Really, really great, Richard!
[edit] Didn't even notice it had already changed ;)
"RecentChanges" (top-left) brings up "You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server." Seems like "avisynth.org" without "www" isn't linking properly. But you are probably already working on that :)

Unfortunately I can't troubleshoot it yet, my ISP is still caching the old DNS
edit: I've edited the template a bit, does that fix it?

My guess is that Richard is working on it - I'm also getting the same message now.

ok, I didn't searched very well and beside of that most of what I've found is spanish to me but I assume it is kind of an alias-name.
And what do you propose for me to rereach avisynth.org - is there something I have to do or is it just due to the avisynth_server and will be fixed - I really have no clue at all!!
sorry...

Don't worry, I'll fix it as soon as my registrar stops being a prick.

Ok, should be working now. Apparently their version of PHP doesn't like following symlinks @_@
Any comments on mailing lists vs. forums, or web-based filehosting vs. FTP? No reason we can't do both, of course, but thought I'd poll the audience first.

Still a minor problem: http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?action=history&page=MoreAboutAviSynth
Webbased hosting - easier to use!
Mailinglist - we don't want Yet-Another-AviSynth forum - look at xvid.org, and see how much the forum is used. I'm thinking a mailing list for developers - like xvid.

> web-based filehosting vs. FTP
I also vote for web-base filehosting, since I can't use FTP at work.

I'm partial to a forum just because I don't like getting lots of email. Looking at xvid.org and going by what I know of Net forums, though, I think you're right -- it's hard to generate traffic from zero, and even harder to generate good traffic. Even if it was restricted to developer issues (core and/or plugins), we'd have to open it to users in order to get feedback & bug reports & such, but once you do there's no way to deflect junk (http://www.xvid.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=965).
In any case, we can definitely do a mailing list for announcements & such. Majordomo is already installed (send a test message to majordomo@avisynth.org if you want to play with it), or I may install Mailman (http://www.list.org/) if we want something fancier -- in particular, if we're gonna be discussing dev issues, a web-accessible archive would be nice.
I like our Wiki design much better than xvid.org -- most of their page's "features" look pretty pointless, and potentially useful ones (eg the FAQ) are way too disorganized. The only things I liked better than ours was the easy download access and the news posts. I added a quick download link to our left pane, but proper news would require a bit more creativity to work around the limitations of 'Tavi. Considering we'll have an announcement listserve soon, does anyone care?
I'll withhold comment on filehosting until some plugin developers show up :)

I'm likeing FTP more, if I'm right it would allow for a user-defined homepage from which you can link to the file area.
@wilbert: why can't you use FTP at work? Is your firewall so restrictive?

@WarpEnterprises
FTPing at my work is restricted by our firewall :(
FTPing Avisynth plugins at my work would get me sacked, so its a good job its restricted ;)

Simon :)

Yeah. Not the whole university, but only our department :(

Well that was easy: http://www.avisynth.org/forum
I can still set up Mailman too, it'll just take awhile since several steps require root access (for which I have to go through a friend). So whoever's arguing in favor of a mailing list, either make do with Majordomo or be prepared to wait :o
Of course, if Doom9 doesn't mind us starting really gory developer-topics here, then all of this is moot
FileHosting is coming along, just need to nudge said friend a bit more...

Is there a way to show all pages in the wiki
(some kind of link map or the like) for look if a page already is there?
Richard Berg

I don't believe so, at least not from the normal UI. There is a search function, though.

Ok, I posted a few threads to the forum showing the kind of stuff I expect we'll be talking about in the future. Any more opinions on whether we do it there, here (Doom9), or via email?
