Hi,

I have successfully backed up several of my DVD's into DivX movies, using the method outlined here (http://larceny.worldonline.co.uk/dvd/index.htm). By encoding the audio at 112 kbits average, and encoding the video at 640 X 480, 0.2 bits/(pixel*frame), I am able to encode DivX movies that are pretty much just as good as the DVD originals. The downside is that a 25-minute segment takes up roughly 300 MB.

Does anyone know of superior methods or software to encode DivX movies? I hope to get DivX movies of DVD quality, but with smaller file sizes.

Thanks,
Kei

PS: I hope I am in the right forum. The other forums talk about specific topics like ripping, splitting, encoding audio, encoding video, etc, but my question is really all of the above.

Hi and welcome,
You are already using the best available free program (Gordian Knot and associated programs) for DVD to DivX. If you upgrade to the latest version it would be good, and read Doom9's guides. Also read in the avisynth forum, focussing on resizing and filtering cause this is where you get your quality from.
http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm is the link to Doom9's gknot guide which has a link to the latest software in it.
