Now that I have finally figured out how to do what I wanted in win2k I have switched to linux and have alot to learn. Linux itself is new to me but my son is helping me with that. I really would like not to have to dual boot the system. The way my son set up the system using VMware I can do everything I want except I need to find LINUX software for Video capture and encoding. I am planning to use DIVX4.x/5.x mostly the reason my system has been set-up with linux. I now have a full player for the TV and a full TV PVR system (mythtv if you have not tried it its very impressive and getting better by the day).

I read the guide on trancode but that seems to be an encoding program (like TMPGEnc). I think that will let me take my captures and encode with Divx 4.x/5.x and apply some filters (Primarily I need IVTC, deinterlace and Hue,saturation, etc). can the trancode program do this?

In my searching I can not seem to find a video capture program that can capture like virtualdub using the huffy codec which worked great for me in win2K. what do you use for video capture in LINUX?

Thanks All

Could you tell us what is your capture card ?
A BT8x8 derivative ?

Personnaly, but that's just my opinion, i like nuppel video because
it keeps sync even when recording for 8 hours

The default format is RT-jpeg (~ mjpeg) which generates HUGE files.

(I have a patched version for AIW cards which can also encode in interlaced xvid if anyone is interested)

And for editing, avidemux which is very close to virtual dub on that matter. But my opinion is probably biased.

Sorry should have stated the system:

AverTV Stereo B878 chip
XP2100+
K7S5A MOBO
512 meg ram
60gig and 80 gig drive
geforce II GTS Nvidia video

The mythTV program that I mentioned above uses rtjpeg (from Nuppelvideo) or mpeg4 (from libavcodec)so those I am familiar with in terms of file size and quality.

The Mpeg4 is outstanding divx real time capture codec and the files are reasonable in size. The rtjpeg is not as good and the files are very large as you stated(both with their best settings).

If there is a video capture program out there that I can use the mpeg4 from libavcodec that may be a great way to go.

Possibility:
Mythtv is only for TV capture right now but makes me think maybe it can be modified by someone in the know to be a video capture program. http://www.mythtv.org/

Thanks for your help

Im' not sure i understand the term "video capture program"
You mean video editing/processing program?

If so

- transcode : command line, very versatile
- mencoder : command line, very versatile, fast
- avidemux : graphical, average versatile.

The three can read nuppel video and avi with mpeg4 video and output avi
with mpeg4 video.

Deinterlace and smoother : three can do
Hue saturation : ?
IVTC : only transcode and mencoder

Sorry by video capture I meant things like 8mm camcorder movies and VCR tapes and convert them to an editable digital format. Looks like
both transcode and mencoder may be what I need will try them. Thanks!!!!

with menencoder, you can directly capture from your tv card with the "-tv" parameter....

cinelerra...Worth a look for editing and capturing. They say it requires heavy Hardware though.

I have used Kino and dvgrabber to download from my Sony Camcorder via firewire. Works fine and kino works.
