You can use Jasc Animation Shop (includet with Jasc Paint Shop). The demo Version can also do it.
1. make a screenshot of every foil and save them to any folder (e.g. pic00.bmp pic 01.bmp,...)

2. Import them to Animation Shop and save them as avi file.

You won't get any transition effects (animation) this way, and no sound effects either. Maybe there's a realtime screen (and sound) capture utility available, but I don't know (yet).

Presentation to Video Converter will do the job.
Download it and convert. It's rather expensive but have a trial version! Here it is: www.geovid.com

I used to do this all the time with a ATI All In Wonder.
I plugged the output of the AIW into the input of the AIW and recorded the avi. Minimize the recording software and maximize the powerpoint. Advance the powerpoint with the arrow keys so the mouse arrow is not shown.

Other options are screen recording programs like HyperCam, Camtasia, and the screen video capture utility in Microsoft Media Encoder.

presentation to video converter by geovid

:thanks:
i tried presentation to video converter.
a free version adds a little logo in the lower right hand corner
but! in spite of everything this program looks promising, i think i'll buy it. it has everything i need: easy to use and intuitive interface, ppt/pps 2 avi/asf/wmv/mpeg conversion, option "burn cd/dvd" (it's also a cd-dvd-burner), no audio and video quality loss, options "auto click" and width-height changing.. etc..
so.. i suppose it's worth of money it costs.

You can try the free microsoft tool windows media encoder. If you set the bitrate sufficiently high, you should be able to catch it lossless, and I'm pretty sure you can capture to raw video and convert it later.

Maybe Fraps?
It will capture screen to an Uncompressd AVI file (really big) and later you can encode to your fav format at you like.

I work for a med school and a large portion of my job is encoding presentations and saving them online. The tool that we use to go from powerpoint to AVI is called Camtasia. It can do a screen record and save it to an AVI file. It also has a powerpoint plug-in so it can sense when you are advancing in your presentation. It can also record a video and audio feed so that you can make a really nice output file with a Picture In Picture.

And it doesn't only output to various codecs in the AVI container, but it also goes quicktime, real media, flash, h.264.
When doing certain formats (AVI and Flash for sure) it uses the slide timings from the plug-in and makes a webpage that allows skipping to next/previous slides.

The company that makes it is called Techsmith. The Camtasia site is
http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp

I think it will do everything you want and more!

hkl8324, I tried Fraps once before when someone else had asked this same question, but it does not work with a .PPS file. Fraps only works with DirectX or OpenGL rendered material.

It is very easy to make screen captures with VirtualDub 1.6.15 using this (http://www.hmelyoff.com/index.php?section=8). All for free as well.

and i know another one screen capture-VidShot Capturer,it`s free, but doesn`t have sound, and Screen VidShot- supported most of codecs installed on user systems, it easily
capture Windows, Region or Desktop, and also you can control movie over capturing.
you can google them both very easily

Could someone tell me whether this is completely free, meaning no registration, no 30-day free trial or whatever?

I did this recently using my NVideo 4200 VIVO video card and DV cam. It was a 15 minute presentation shown at a 21st Birthday and I videoed the function. When I produced the DVD I also included 4 slidehows of still photos and I got the copy of the .PST file of the presentation.

I just set my screen res to 800x600 (close to PAL 720x576), played the slideshow fullscreen, set the VIVO composite output to mirror the screen display, connected the video out into the A/Vin of my DVcam, recorded it, and then rewound and replayed it using the firewire connect to my PC and WinDV (freeware) to transfer it. I don't plan to do this often so it's not worth my purchasing software to do it.

Indeed, it looks like it. A useful free tool from one of those companies that charge $30+ for every generic video converter tool they can clone, who'd have guessed?
http://www.geovid.com/VidShot_Capturer/

Hopefully their software is designed better than their site, though. Ick.

Hi,

To convert Powerpoint to avi, I use camstudio. This is an open source screen capturer (video and audio). I start capturing, run the presentation, and stop capturing. That's all.

Camstudio supports all WFW codecs you have installed (choose one suitable to real-time compression). It provides a also a fast lossles codec. I've had any problems to post-processing video compressed with this codec (uses delta frames) but is usable. Support windowed or full-screen captures and is easy to use.

You can obtain camstudio at:

http://www.camstudio.org/

Good luck

Trying video screen capture with CamStudio. What is the best codec to use for animated screensaver ( testing with Sachs Marine)?

Everything I've tried ends up a little choppy, but it's the best I've found so far (tested many, including Fraps).

if you got a Mac at hand you can also use Keynote to open the ppt and export to qt, idvd, flash etc. If you choose qt, you can define audio and video codec, frame rate etc. After that muxing to avi shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone know of a free tool that just extracts the audio from a Powerpoint presentation?
My wife gets a lot of these in emails and occasionally (very occasionally!) the music is worth saving.

Take Camtasia or this PowerPoint to video (http://www.ppt-to-dvd.com/ppt-to-video-overview.html#242)converter to transfer your presentation to AVI.

You can convert the powerpoint file to AVI and join the two AVI files together.
