Trying to deterimine which DVD-rom drive is the best for ripping both music cd's (DAE) as well as DVD movies. I have searched around the old messages, but I haven't seen a real discussion here.

Thanks,

whatever you choose, don't rip with a dvd writer drive, those max out at 2x. My Sony DDU1621 rips at around 6-7x which averages around 15 mins a dvd which is perfectly fine for me

I like my Liteon, it rips at about 14.Xx on Single layer disk and between 8x and 10xish (10 rarely) on DVD9s.

This is of course in DVd Decrypter with all the Aspi goo installed.

I couldn't be happier with my Pioneers.

I have a pair of them, a 10x SCSI in my main box and a 16x IDE in my movie PC that I do most of my ripping on, and both have been great.

Time to rip a 7.5 gig DVD-9 for me with DVD Decryptor is just a shade over 23 minutes usually with the 16x.

Toshiba drives I've also had good luck with, although they're admittedly not as fast. On the other hand Toshibas are much quieter than Pioneers are if that's a concern.

I have used SONYs Samsungs, NECs, and Liteons. The Liteon is the fastest by far, and just about the best DVD rom money can buy

hi,

i've got an asus dvd-e616 and i'm really happy with it. it rips both music and dvds very fast (music ~30-35x, dvds ~6-10x). also, it reads most of the copy-protected audio-cds (i read that in a test, couldn't confirm it so far since i don't have any copy-protected audio-cd). this drive is really a silent one, great for watching movies...

before the asus i had a liteon ltd-122 (12x) and i hate it. it was loud and slow, never got above 6x ripping-speed with dvds.
